The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for a Manager, Human Resources. Working as a member of the Human Resources department, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy.

The Manager, Human Resources, is a trusted advisor and partner in employee relations, learning and career development, onboarding, performance management, compensation and recognition. The person in this role will develop trusted relationships across the organization, educate staff, and leverage data to foster an equitable and inclusive work environment.

Location: The position is located at the American Lung Association’s Chicago, Illinois office and will be a hybrid of in-person and virtual work.

Responsibilities:

Performance Management

  • Coach and advise management and staff to foster strong work relationships, resolve issues and support retention and engagement.
  • Advise managers to improve their skills with coaching, feedback, issue resolution, corrective action, and performance improvement plans to drive performance and retention. Conduct thorough and objective investigations, partnering with legal counsel as needed.
  • Stay up to date with evolving employment legislation, recommend policy changes and develop communication materials to educate the organization.

Talent Management

  • Support full lifecycle of the employee from on-boarding, engagement, development, exit, and retirement.
  • Support training and development activities to enhance manager, employee and team skills and performance.
  • Assist in developing performance management and career development tools, formalizing succession planning, and talent programs and policies that cultivate employee engagement and high performance.

Compensation Planning & Administration

  • Advise management on compensation decisions and support leaders to hold effective pay conversations so staff understand the link between pay and performance.
  • Support other HR activities as needed, including leave management, payroll and budget reconciliation, job documentation, benchmarking, and projects to improve HR operational excellence.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR Management or related area. Master’s degree or PHR/SPHR certification preferred.
  • A minimum of five years’ HR experience including experience with performance management, staff development, onboarding and engagement. Non-profit experience preferred.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including presentation and group facilitation skills.
  • Designs, recommends, implements and evaluates HR programs, practices and policies intended to promote diversity, equity and inclusion
  • Ability to maintain trusted relationships at all levels and build buy-in among organizational stakeholders when implementing change initiatives
  • Demonstrated learning agility and resourcefulness to quickly grasp and apply new concepts as organizational needs evolve.
  • Strong project management skills, with experience identifying a need and working with others to build and implement a talent solution to satisfy the need.
  • Strong data analysis and reporting skills, with ability to draw actionable insights from people data.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative and work under deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • In-depth knowledge of HR practices and employment laws.
  • Ability to develop, interpret and effectively communicate policies and procedures.
  • Computer proficiency MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Proficiency with HRIS systems; ADP WFN user experience preferred.

Compensation: Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location. The target hiring range for this position is between $67,000 and $82,000 per annum.

Benefits: The Lung Association offers a comprehensive benefits package including:

  • Paid Leave - 10 vacation days in the first year (15 days thereafter), 2 personal days and 15 sick days per year, as well as 12 company-paid holidays per year. We also offer Paid Parental Leave for eligible employees.
  • Insurance - Employees (and their eligible dependents) can enroll in our medical, dental, and vision plans, as well as voluntary plans for critical illness, accident, hospital indemnity, short-term disability and supplemental life/AD&D insurance. Employees will be enrolled in company-paid life/AD&D and long-term disability Insurance coverage.
  • Retirement Plan - Eligible employees can participate in our 401(k) Defined Contribution Retirement Plan, which offers matching employer contributions (up to 4%) and year-end discretionary non-elective contributions.
