ORGANIZATION: 

CoAction, founded in 1965, is your local Community Action Agency. We serve people, from infancy to old age, who are experiencing financial hardship. People experiencing financial hardship find opportunities, resources, and respect at CoAction. We envision the people of Northwest Indiana flourishing regardless of income, ability, or age.

Serving residents in Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Jasper, Newton, Pulaski, and Starke Counties


FUNCTION:

Reporting to the President/CEO, the Director of Development and Community Engagement provides overall direction and guidance for the execution of establishing CoActions brand, developing donor engagement, asset building, and securing income through social enterprises. This role partners with the President/CEO and leadership team to develop strategies with organizational impact. Collaborating closely with internal and external stakeholders, this person heads the organization’s communication strategy. This person devises communications program guidelines and policies, and develops a plan for directly managing internal and external communications activities that promote, enhance, and protect the organization’s brand and reputation. Additionally, this role leads donor prospecting, strategy, and relationship cultivation and stewardship, to ensure that CoActions’ new business development efforts are efficient, effective and of the highest possible quality.



MAJOR DUTIES:

  • With the President/CEO and management teams develops multi-year business development strategies to meet agency needs. Oversee the community development efforts of the organization,
  • Integrate Core Competencies in short term and long term strategic development. 
  • Directs and supports the design of marketing initiatives to ensure service and brand of CoAction are successfully launched into the community for donors and service participants.
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of high impact marketing materials such as case for support, brochures, web content, etc.
  • Networks with professionals in peer organizations to enhance opportunities for partnership.
  • In conjunction with the President/CEO, represents CoAction to funders, donors, partners, and other external audiences as required in support of securing funding for CoAction programs.
  • Oversees the development, strengthening and management of all systems, tools, processes, procedures and protocols necessary for successful resource development efforts.
  • Ensures optimal coordination and collaboration with all other relevant departments and teams.
  • Supports and contributes to the organization’s strategies to secure funding
  • Serves as proposal leader/team member for funding proposal submissions. Write and/or edit proposals, donor reports and other organizational promotional material, as needed. Tracks and improves, as necessary, the overall proposal success rate.
  • Ensures the development of high-functioning proposal teams and effective budgeting of resources (financial and human) in order to successfully carry out the CoAction development strategies
  • Lead/facilitate donor identification, targeting, relationship cultivation and stewardship in coordination with other staff and departments in support of securing direct program resources for the organization. Maintain and enhance systems and services for gift processing, donor and volunteer stewardship and recognition, and provide regular reporting.

General

 

  • Manages department fiscal operations, including budget development and authorization of expenditures according to the approved agency wide budget and the CoAction fiscal policy.
  • Monitors the department’s fiscal health and communicates recommendations to the President/CEO, CSO and VP of Finance.
  • Supervision of staff, sustaining and developing a productive team of professionals through staff development and the strategic use of information for learning and performance enhancement.
  • Assists the President/CEO and Management teams in leading the organizations long and short range strategic planning activities in support of the CoAction mission.
  • Coordinates program strategic planning with organizational strategic planning.
  • Directs and leads the planning and writing of new and renewal grant applications.
  • Responsible for CoAction quality measurement and improvement programs; key leadership for outcome measures.
  • Responsible for overseeing the provider contracting and monitoring process in compliance with funding source requirements as well as appropriate follow-up regarding non-compliance issues.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings, staff training programs, supervisory sessions and accept responsibility for aiding the development of positive team relationships.
  • Other duties as assigned by the President/CEO.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s degree or equivalent preferred.
  • 5-10 years of nonprofit experience in management/development function
  • 5 or more years’ supervising staff.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
  • Ability to construct, articulate, and implement annual strategic development plan.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent written and verbal communications skills.  Demonstrated commitment and passion for the CoAction Mission.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
