The Stony Brook School is seeking a full-time On-Site Mechanic to become a valued member of our Facilities Department. Reporting to the Director of Facilities, the selected candidate will hold a pivotal position within our maintenance team. The primary responsibilities will include hands-on MEP and HVAC campus installations and repairs across our campus.

The Stony Brook School is an independent Christian college preparatory school (grades 7-12) that resides on a beautiful 55- acre campus on the north shore of Long Island in NY. Our campus assets include 16 institutional buildings, 31 single-family dwellings, seven dormitories with 200+ beds, 15 employee apartments, and a motor pool of 20+ vehicles consisting of cars, trucks and multi-functional vans, and various athletic venues.


RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Identify and resolve maintenance issues promptly.
  • Remove and install HVAC systems in compliance with local HVAC codes.
  • Install pipes and duct systems in residential properties.
  • Interpret wiring diagrams accurately.
  • Diagnose, address and repair maintenance equipment efficiently.
  • Respond to resident or supervisor maintenance requests and assigned work orders promptly.
  • Log issues into the Work Order system for further action needed.
  • Assume responsibility for all facilities-related emergencies after hours, coordinating necessary resources for resolution.
  • Undertake larger ongoing projects during off-hours, such as painting, carpentry, or remodeling projects, ensuring minimal disruption to campus activities.
  • Communicate effectively and respectfully with all levels of management and staff, maintaining a positive, customer-service oriented attitude.
  • Adhere strictly to safety guidelines and maintain a high level of professionalism at all times.
  • Demonstrate flexibility in adapting to changing job duties and priorities.
  • Engage in frequent interaction with individuals across various levels.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

  • HVAC technician skills and qualification required.
  • Demonstrated strong customer service and interpersonal skills, coupled with a genuine commitment to serving a community of faculty, staff and students.
  • Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
  • HVAC certified highly preferred.
  • HVAC technician skills and qualifications.
  • EPA certified.
  • Competency in general plumbing skills.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Possession of a clean driver's license.
  • Prior hands-on experience as Facilities Mechanic, encompassing a broad range of tasks such as carpentry, construction, sheet-rocking, painting, concrete work, window repair, hardware maintenance, exterior grounds upkeep, and machine/equipment maintenance.
  • Exceptional diagnostic skills and critical thinking skills are crucial for accurately identifying issues and formulating effective solutions.
  • Expertise in a variety of systems, equipment and tools.
  • This position involves frequent lifting, bending, and walking, amounting to approximately 80% of the time. The job may entail physically demanding tasks such as climbing ladders, maneuvering in tight spaces, and lifting heavy objects.

Additional details: This position entails an 8- hour workday which includes a paid lunch break. The schedule may entail late afternoons, evenings, and some Saturday hours, with potential for overtime. Flexibility in the daily schedule may be required.

Pay range: $40 to $45 per hour with possible overtime.
