Job DescriptionJob Description

AMECO is looking to hire an experienced Senior Sales Tax Accountant to conduct work directly related to sales & use tax. This position performs complex accounting activities, ensures the accuracy of taxation, and recommends system changes that encourage compliance with state and local taxation bodies. Advanced knowledge of state & local tax laws in conjunction with the manufacturing, construction, and maritime industries is required. Qualified candidates must be able to consistently exercise discretion and independent judgment to drive tax law compliance.

Key responsibilities:

  • Preparation of state, local, indirect tax filings such as rental or sales & use tax
  • Preparation of Canada GST/HST/PST returns
  • Maintain tax calendar to ensure timely and accurate compliance of all tax deadlines
  • Resale certificate preparation for vendors
  • Review customer provided exemption certificates
    • Verify account numbers and completeness of certificate
    • Research tax laws and assign exemptions in CertCapture based on industry
    • Knowledge of manufacturing, construction, and maritime industry tax law is a plus
  • Correspond with taxing authorities when notices or audits are received
  • Review contracts for tax impact and optimal tax positioning
  • Business and tax license registrations (State / local/ gross receipts tax)
  • GL account analyses including reconciling sales tax accounts
  • Prepare Journal Entries / Reclass entries when needed
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with high standard of professionalism
  • Participate in meetings – in person, phone, and Microsoft Teams
  • Complete special projects (tax planning, tax research for compliance and internal review)

Requirements:
  • Accredited bachelor’s or master’s degree in applicable field of study and three (3) years of work-related experience or a combination of education and directly related experience equal to nine (9) years, if non-degreed
  • One (1) year of multi-state sales & use tax experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Strong evaluation and decision-making skills
  • Knowledge of Avalara’s AvaTax, Avalara Tax Research (formerly TTR), CertCapture, and SAP Business One are a plus
  • Proficiency in Avalara’s AvaTax Advanced rules, Custom rules, and Jurisdiction overrides are a plus
  • Ability to learn and apply knowledge of applicable local, state/province, and federal/national statutes and guidelines
  • Ability to attend to detail and work in a time-conscious and time-effective manner
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel
