Activity Assistant

Location: Prospect House Revere, MA 02151

Hours: Per Diem


Job Description:

Provide individual and group active and passive activities which enhance the mental, physical, spiritual and social needs of residents to allow residents to continue playing an active role in our residential community.

Qualifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of therapeutic recreational techniques. Ability to work independently or in groups. Candidate must be creative and motivational, have the ability to oversee daily programming in the temporary absence of the Program Director. Computer skills required; knowledge of calendar software helpful. Job requires frequent bending, stretching, stooping and lifting. The successful candidate will have a great smile, the ability to laugh and possess experience working with elders. Willing to work weekends and some holidays is also required.


Duties and Responsibilities:

The responsibility of this part-time position will include but are not limited to the following:

1. Carry out preplanned activities as well as creating new programming of your choice (with approval of the Activities Director).
2. Responsible for preparation and clean up of supplies.
3. Accompany residents (with an aide) on monthly outings to prearranged locations.
4. Welcome new residents and introduce them to the activities of the community.
5. Assist other managers with any special functions for residents (i.e. theme dinners or holiday decorating of community).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED).
  • Able to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Able to write simple correspondence. Able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Able to work various schedules and shifts as needed.

Required Behavior:

  • Appearance is neat, clean, and according to dress code.
  • Enjoy working with the elderly; possess patience and exhibit a kind spirit.
  • Able to clearly present information through the spoken word; read and interpret complex information; talk with residents, family members and customers; listen well.
  • Able to communicate with others in a warm and helpful manner while simultaneously building credibility and rapport.
  • Able to work alone or cooperatively with a group of people to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Able to be tactful; maintain confidences and foster an ethical work environment; give proper credit to others; handle all situations honestly.
  • Able to keep an open mind and change opinions on the basis of new information; perform a variety of tasks and change focus quickly as demands change; manage transitions effectively from task to task; adapt to varying needs of the residents and/or the department.

Physical Demands:

  • Physically able to move at least 50 lbs. without assistance.
  • Physically able to bend, reach, and work in small areas.
  • Physically able to push and pull equipment and furnishings.
  • Physically able to stand and to work on hands and knees for long periods of time.
