The ideal candidate will be a licensed physician (MD or DO), board-certified in a primary care specialty, with a proven track record in ambulatory care or occupational clinical settings. The Medical Director will play a key role in ensuring the highest standards of medical care, providing expert consultation, and leading quality improvement initiatives within the assigned clinics.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Occupational Health Oversight: Oversee and support the on-site occupational health needs for Federal government agencies, representing the US Public Health Service as a surrogate Medical Director.
  • Medical Consultation: Provide first-line medical consultation to local managers and employees, ensuring medical guidance aligns with Federal Occupational Health (FOH) policies and guidelines.
  • Acute and Emergency Care: Deliver acute emergency care, conduct federally regulated and agency-mandated examinations (e.g., medical surveillance, return to work), and offer employee health consultations.
  • Hands-On Examinations: Perform hands-on examinations, provide professional medical opinions related to work clearances, and manage short-term treatment for minor illnesses and injuries.
  • Quality Improvement: Develop, implement, and oversee a quality improvement program within the clinic, ensuring high standards of care. This includes assigning responsibilities, conducting training sessions, and participating in audits.
  • Program Review and Documentation: Regularly review quality program data, assess the impact of interventions, and conduct annual program reviews. Maintain all relevant documentation and participate in patient satisfaction survey reviews.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Prepare, review, and participate in agency emergency preparedness and pandemic planning activities.

Specific Tasks for the Medical Director, Department of Energy:

  • Security Program Oversight: Train in the customer agency's specific security program and oversee a comprehensive medical program across four clinics in different states.
  • Suitability Determinations: Make determinations of position suitability for Federal Agents, Federal Recruits, and Staff based on job task analysis and medical standards provided by the customer agency.
  • Medical Program Assessment: Assess current and proposed components of the customer agency's medical program, ensuring alignment with agency standards.
  • Chart Reviews and Meetings: Attend weekly chart reviews with case managers at the agency, and participate in other requested meetings.
  • Conference Participation: Attend the customer agency's annual medical conference, which may require out-of-town travel. Additional travel, consultations, or projects may be required to maintain or improve the medical program's integrity.
  • Expert Testimony: Provide expert witness testimony regarding medical recommendations on employability and reasonable accommodations as requested by the customer agency.
  • Program Reviews: Conduct bi-annual reviews of the medical program as required by the customer agency.
Qualifications

  • Education and Certification: Must be a licensed physician (MD or DO) board-certified in a primary care specialty (e.g., Family Practice, Internal Medicine).
  • Experience: A minimum of two (2) years of experience in an ambulatory care or occupational clinical setting. Experience working with Federal government agencies in a clinical setting or as a medical consultant is required.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Broad understanding of Federal safety and health regulations, and knowledge of employer workplace drug testing programs.
  • ADA Expertise: Experience addressing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requests and providing witness testimony regarding fitness for duty or reasonable accommodation cases.
  • Certifications: Must hold current BLS/ACLS/AED certifications. FAA flight surgeon certification may be required for certain positions.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Professional Conduct: Demonstrate high levels of professional conduct and maintain a positive personal image.
  • Communication: Strong communication skills, with the ability to work harmoniously and effectively with diverse teams and Federal agency personnel.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong organizational skills with a meticulous approach to medical documentation and clinic operations.
