Job purpose
The Archdiocese of Philadelphia (AoP) is seeking a dynamic and visionary Director of Strategic Operations who will be dedicated to steering the development and execution of strategic initiatives rooted in the values and teachings of the Catholic faith. This leader will not only spearhead the creation of comprehensive strategies that foster meaningful community engagement but will also ensure that each endeavor reflects the compassionate and service-oriented spirit inherent in the Church's mission. Reporting directly to the Chief Strategy Officer (CSO), this leadership role will be instrumental in guiding the Archdiocese towards continued growth, organizational excellence, and a steadfast commitment to serving the community.
Duties and responsibilities
Faith-Aligned Strategic Planning and Project Management:
- Collaborate with the CSO and Office for Communications to lead the development, refinement, and implementation of strategic plans deeply rooted in the teachings and mission of the Archbishop and the modern day Catholic Church. Oversee and manage projects, in tandem with the Director of Project Management and Marketing, that contribute to the AoP's strategic plan, reassessing relevance and projected timelines at every stage.
- Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the spiritual and societal impact of strategic initiatives, in addition to conventional metrics.
- Identify potential risks and develop strategies to mitigate them, ensuring adherence to ethical and spiritual standards alongside legal and regulatory compliance.
Operational Excellence:
- Develop and oversee operational processes and systems to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and collaboration across various departments and ministries.
- Collaborate closely with the AoP's financial teams to ensure responsible stewardship of resources, as well as budget and allocate resources in a way that aligns with the values of the Church.
Collaborative Ministry & Communications:
- Foster collaboration and unity among the department, guiding the team to work harmoniously towards fulfilling the Archdiocese's mission in accordance with the teachings of the Church.
- Plan and oversee the communications of the AoP to the parishes, community and other stakeholders in a way that embraces the message of Jesus. Create a standard for communications across various channels and means.
Leadership and Faith-Centered Team Development:
- Nurture a team culture grounded in faith, providing guidance and mentorship to cultivate talent and uphold the teachings of the Church. Recruit, hire and train new department staff.
- Cultivate meaningful relationships with clergy, parish leaders, community partners and donors, fostering a shared commitment to advancing the mission of the AoP.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Communications, Nonprofit Management, or related field (Master's degree strongly preferred).
- Proven experience (8+ years) in strategic planning, operations management, or executive leadership, preferably within a nonprofit or religious organization.
- Demonstrated commitment to the mission of the Roman Catholic Church and deep familiarity with archdiocesan and parish structures and a through understanding of Catholic parish life and ministry.
- Strong financial acumen with demonstrated experience in budgeting, financial analysis, and resource allocation, aligned with Catholic values.
- Exceptional leadership skills, rooted in faith, with the ability to inspire and guide teams towards common spiritual and organizational objectives.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to translate the Church's teachings and values into actionable plans and measurable outcomes.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills deeply embedded in Gospel values and teachings of the Catholic Church.
- Proven track record leading a successful team in a project management role.
Working conditions
Some nights and weekends may be required for additional meetings.
Physical requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tool or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; talk or hear.
