Desktop Publishing Specialist II

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Desktop Publishing Specialist II creates and modifies medium to complex technical publication documents for the United States Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force. The Desktop Publishing Specialist II interfaces with customer or Government representatives, as required, during length of project. The Desktop Publishing Specialist II plans and arranges projects under minimum supervision. The DPS II works closely with various project team members.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
· Provides back-up to the receptionist/front desk duties; routes calls and visitors to appropriate personnel
· Prepares all types of publication documents in accordance with customer, Government, or company specifications
· Generates final publication documents for customer and internal reviews; finds and corrects errors prior to submission
· Performs effective file maintenance and file management, including saving, naming, backing up, deleting, and archiving documents according to established policies and procedures
· Creates medium to complex electronic documents and templates according to customer and internal specifications using publishing software
· Assists in planning and coordinating projects according to customer requirements while identifying and applying cost-saving techniques
· Estimates amount of individual effort required to satisfy production requirements and to meet or exceed expected rates of production on each assigned project
· Participates in assigned efforts, ensuring assigned tasks are completed on time and in a cost-effective manner
· May assists with training new team members
· Works closely with internal and external personnel; work with management personnel to ensure deadlines are met
· Participates in start-of-work meetings and other meetings related to assigned projects; daily or weekly status reports to management is expected
· Produces documentation or services in accordance with a pre-established schedule
· Communicates project status with internal staff and customer, as required
· Understands, manages, and reports issues, technological advances and anomalies, and hardware/software requirements
· Understands and communicates details of files/documents, graphic file types, and workload
· Records, trends, and reports individual metrics
· Assists other team members working together on the same effort
· Produces quality work within profitability goals
· Performs any other job-related instructions, as requested, with reasonable accommodation
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
· General office environment; required to use office equipment (personal computer, telephone/smartphone, photocopier); required to sit/stand for long periods of time
· May be required (on short notice) to work overtime/additional hours to meet deadlines; may occasionally require working weekends and/or holidays, as needed
· May be required to travel by motor vehicle and/or airplane to complete job requirements; estimated to be less than 10 percent of the time
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
· High school diploma or General Education Equivalency (GED) is required
· Certificate from a vocational school or technical school is preferred
· Associate degree in Desktop Publishing, Computer Science, English, or Art/Design is preferred
Experience:
· Minimum of two to three (2-3) years of experience or specialized training in desktop publishing, XML/SGML coding, proofreading, or art/design is required
Technical Experience:
· Basic proficiency level with Microsoft programs, such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel, is required
· Basic proficiency level with Adobe Acrobat (PDF) is required
· Intermediate proficiency level with publishing software is preferred
· Previous coding experience with XML or SGML to be able to create and apply tagging principals is required
Certification/Licensure:
· Valid driver’s license in state of residency with acceptable driving record is preferred
