The Municipal Court Pre-trial Services Unit (MCPTS U) focus on reducing mass incarceration by supporting clients before trial through a variety diversion and other programs. The paralegal in the Pretrial Unit assigned to Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition (ARD)/Domestic Violence (DV) Diversion handles a wide-ranging set of tasks to assist the supervisors and attorneys in case preparation and file management. This position works closely with the supervisors to ensure accurate scheduling, track caseloads, and manage unit tasks. The paralegal acts as a liaison between supervisors, attorneys, clients, and court administration to effect accurate communication and results.

What You’ll Do

  • Maintains all legal files
  • Coordinates the referral of cases to the District Attorney’s Office for ARD and DV Diversion
  • Updates the database and DCM (referrals, rejections, approvals, court dates)
  • Prepares active cases for court appearances, including preparing referral forms for Evaluations (CRN/FIR) and referral forms for treatment programs (anger management, mental health)
  • Corresponds with clients concerning completion of CRN evaluation, providing auto insurance information and scheduling the review of ARD Offer Packets; compliance with treatment programs
  • Prepares and sends ARD Offer Packets to Clients
  • Sends Signed ARD Offer Packets to the District Attorney’s Office and monitors the e-filing of offers
  • Assists the Attorney in the Courtroom and Handles Status Hearings
  • Oversees DV Diversion expungement and early termination of ARD/Expungement process for successful graduates from start to finish; including creating all petitions, and filing
  • Answers questions from other attorneys and keep them informed of referral statuses and eligibility
  • Acts as a liaison between attorneys, clients, staff, etc.
  • Takes notes and mark files with all appropriate notations
  • Answers questions from clients and attorneys in courtroom and collect paperwork
  • Assist with the Drexel Research Project on the costs of ARD
  • Cross-Training in the duties of other MCPTU Paralegals and Performing such duties as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

What You’ll Need

  • Experience working with clients in criminal justice proceedings, preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree or Associates’ degree with Paralegal Certification or any equivalent combination of acceptable education and experience
  • Experience working with indigent clients in criminal justice proceedings preferred
  • Ability to interact professionally with attorneys, clients, office and court personnel
  • Fluency in Spanish Language a plus, but not required
  • Must have analytical and interpretive skills
  • Computer literacy including the ability to learn multiple internal and external computer systems
  • Ability to learn the court system and internal and external procedures
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to think and work independently
  • Must be able to withstand prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • May have to lift up to 15 pounds
  • Travel to various courtrooms and prisons as needed
