Days: Monday - Friday

SUMMARY
Responsible for medical quality and continuity and delivery of Hospice & Palliative Medicine services. Develops clinical and support staff. Ensures clinical standards and outcomes are met. Ensures compliance with federal and state regulations, JCAHO and NHPCO standards. Performs in a manner which aids the agency in meeting its Mission.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Sees patients in palliative medicine consultation as required.
- Collaborates in developing plan of care with attending physician as well as other members of the team.
- Participates in the development of palliative care programs in institutions where Alive Hospice & Palliative Care provides services, as required.
- Serves as collaborating physician for Hospice & Palliative Care Nurse Practitioners.
- Serves as a medical resource to Hospice & Palliative Care clinical staff via phone or beeper.
- Serves as a liaison between staff and attending physician.
- Serves as a Hospice & Palliative Medicine representative to the medical community informing physicians and other health care professionals of the availability and scope of agency’s services.
- Collaborates with the CMO, Clinical Coordinator, IDT, and COO to continually improve the quality and cost effectiveness of care and to enhance the work lives of the employees.
- Participates in education of nursing students, medical students and residents.
- Participates in community education programs, professional organizations and legislative activity as needed.
- Maintains and develops knowledge of evolving hospice and palliative care philosophy and practices.
- Promotes the advancement of hospice and palliative care knowledge by participating on the appropriate committees of the State and National Organizations.
- Participates in Hospice & Palliative Care Continuing Education.
- Assists Hospice Team Medical Directors when needed
- Participates in 24 hours a day, 7 day week on-call physician coverage. In addition, he or she is available to staff unable to reach the attending physician or designated physician on-call.
- Attends team meetings as assigned.
- Reviews records of incoming hospice patients for eligibility for hospice care and for inpatient level of care.
- Other duties may also be assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Serves as a collaborating physician for Nurse Practitioners.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, rations, and proportions to practical situations.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exits. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Current unrestricted medical license from the State of Tennessee. Eligible for malpractice insurance. Eligible for credentialing by local institution. Board eligible in Palliative Care. If required to drive to carry out the duties of this position: current drivers license and automobile insurance as required by Tennessee State Law. Current unrestricted DEA certification.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
Reliable transportation necessary. Demonstrate ability to effectively manage human and material resources. Respond calmly and competently in stressful or crisis situations. Demonstrate ability to guide project teams and analyze systems.

Teamwork: Functions consistently and collaboratively as an integral part of Medial Services and other teams (committees, etc.) bringing experience and education to contribute to optimal team functions and outcomes.
Ethics: Demonstrates a high level of work, personal and professional ethics.

Requirements:CONTINUING EDUCATION
The agency requires this position to complete 18 hours of continuing education per year covering topics that will contribute to improvements in carrying out the above responsibilities. Regulatory agencies may require some disciplines to have additional hours in order to be licensed or certified.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy from accredited school of medicine. A minimum of four years of medical experience preferred.
