GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES

Under general supervision, the Public Works Inspector is responsible for monitoring and inspecting public works construction projects, new subdivisions, and private developments. Responsibilities may include inspecting projects and determining compliance with codes and ordinances. Inspecting construction plans and approving the completed work. You will also respond to complaints and concerns from the general public and maintain operational files. This is a full-time, non-exempt position.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs inspections of developments, capital improvement and construction projects, encroachment activities, and other related projects/activities.
  • Determines code compliance.
  • Reviews and approves completed work.
  • Researches and evaluates customer complaints; notifies appropriate individuals of issues; verifies complaints have been resolved.
  • Prepares and maintains construction and building inspection results, files, and logs; prepares related reports.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.


Requirements:

REQUIRED KNOWLEGE

  • Inspection principles and methods.
  • Construction principles and methods.
  • Customer service principles.
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Recordkeeping principles.
  • Computers and related software applications.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Performing inspections of buildings and property.
  • Providing customer service.
  • Reading construction drawings, plans, and/or specifications.
  • Applying applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Maintaining logs and records.
  • Using a computer and related software applications.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) and five years construction experience; or an equivalent. Combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Positions in this class typically require climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects
  • Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • TDOT Asphalt and Concrete Testing Certification
  • Level I Erosion Control Certification
  • Valid Driver’s License
