Position: Assistant Skating Director

Rate: $25.50/hour

Under the supervision of the Skating Director and/or Assistant Manager, this position is responsible for assisting with the supervision, instruction and development of the Edge Skating Academy including Theatre on Ice, ice shows, Academy Prep Program, Learn to Skate program, and Hockey Prep Program. The position will keep accurate attendance records, administration of registration, and program management system as well as evaluate and assess skill level and progress of all participants; assists with scheduling, implementing, and programing of the Figure Skating Academy, Academy Prep Program, ice shows, camps, and clinics. The job may require shifts ranging from morning, evening and weekends hours

Job Description:

  • Assist with the daily operations of the Edge Skating Academy including the planning and execution of the Learn to Skate program, Hockey Prep Program, Academy Prep Program, ice shows, camps and clinics.
  • Administrative duties include but not limited to participant registration, attendance reporting, , updating procedures manuals, data entry, establishing classes, printing and distributing of materials to staff and participants and management of Community Pass.
  • Assist with training, scheduling, supervising and development of program part time staff of 40 staff members.
  • Assist with the development, implementation, and tracking of a marketing strategy; notifying the public of District events, sales, and promotions of merchandise. Communicates to Learn to Skate participants of upcoming classes, progress reports, welcome emails and information pertaining to skater evaluations.
  • Teach lessons and skills by instructing classes and/or coaching one-on-one for multiple levels as needed. Be prepared, creative and energized when teaching.
  • Responsible for recording attendance and progress of each participant. Encourage participants practice and register for next session of learn to skate, learn to play hockey, freestyle sessions (spring, summer and winter break camps) ice shows and academy prep.
  • Assists with providing parent education as it relates to the development, goals, best practices, equipment (both figure skating and hockey) and ice etiquette for participants.
  • Ensure that appropriate equipment, costumes, props, volunteers etc. is available for classes and events; set up and take down equipment. Completes preventative maintenance and sanitizing measures by inspecting equipment on a regular basis.
  • Provide a safe learning environment; keep students in line of vision at all times/never turn back on class; enforce safety and program rules, policies, and regulations during Learn to Skate classes, figure skating sessions and classes, ice shows and Theatre on Ice.
  • Enforce safety and program rules, policies, and regulations. Recognize emergency and dangerous situations by reacting quickly and calmly; administer first aid as needed. Completes Accident/Incident report. Inspect and correct or inform supervisor of any facility, ice quality or equipment hazards.
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Acts as a liaison between the U.S. Figure Skating Member Home Club and facility.
  • Attend and participate in professional group meetings and continuing education in U.S. Figure Skating or US Ice Rinks; stay abreast of new trends and innovations.



  • Tier I
    • Three (3) years experience coaching with group and private lessons.
    • Successful completion of USFS tests (Gold Medalist) in at least one facet of figure skating (Figures, Singles, Skating Skills, Dance, Pairs) and/or U.S. Figure Skating Level 1 Accreditation in Program Director, Group Instructor, Figures, Singles, Skating Skills, Dance, Pairs or Synchronized Skating.
  • Tier II
    • Five (5) years experience coaching with group and private lessons.
    • Three (3) years experience in a management position.
    • Successful completion of USFS tests (Silver Medalist) in at least one facet of figure skating (Figures, Singles, Skating Skills, Dance, Pairs).
    • U.S. Figure Skating Level 2 Accreditation in Program Director, Group Instructor, Figures, Singles, Skating Skills, Dance, Pairs or Synchronized Skating.
  • Tier III
    • Seven (7) years experience coaching with group and private lessons.
    • Five (5) years experience in a management position.
    • Successful completion of USFS tests (Gold Medalist) in at least one facet of figure skating (Figures, Singles, Skating Skills, Dance, Pairs).
    • U.S. Figure Skating Master Accreditation in Program Director, Group Instructor, Figures, Singles, Skating Skills, Dance, Pairs or Synchronized Skating.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES & OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current coach membership in U.S. Figure Skating, Coach I.C.E. membership, current U.S. Figure Skating coach compliance, and Liability Insurance.
  • Current certifications in AED/CPR and First Aid or the ability to obtain such certifications within sixty (60) days of employment.
  • Concussion recognition training is required prior to employment and must be renewed annually.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one within thirty (30) days of employment. Must be insurable by the District carrier at the onset and for the duration of employment.

MATERIAL AND EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Knowledge of all levels and facets of the U.S. Figure Skating (USFS), USA Hockey and Learn to Skate USA.
  • Demonstrate proper safety knowledge and use of all equipment in assigned area.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods and general office equipment (computer, copier, fax, phone, etc.). Proficiency with applicable computer software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, POS)

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed indoors at the ice arena in a 45-50 degree environment. Exposure to frequent cold temperatures and icy conditions for extended periods of time.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Must be able to push, pull or balance. Upper body strength is a requisite to lift/move a maximum of 50 pounds unassisted, and lift/move a maximum of 100 pounds with assistance. Vision requirements include: near acuity, far acuity, depth perception and color vision. Must be able to frequently sit, stand, walk, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, reach and lift, exhibit manual dexterity and the ability to handle objects. Requires the ability to communicate verbally with both children and adults. The ability to talk and hear via the telephone, e-mail, and through face-to-face communication is needed.
