Position Summary

Mesabi Metallics is looking for a highly motivated individual with a Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences (Geology) and at least 3 years of experience in a technical role in a Mining environment. The ideal candidate will have prior experience in a mining environment and should have thorough knowledge of all facets of the mining industry, including measurement and operations safety management and environmental regulations.

Job Responsibilities

Reporting to the Manager – Mine Technical Services, the Geologist will be responsible for the following:

  • Perform daily pit tours to inspect shovel faces, replace grade control signage, and sample as required
  • Perform blast hole mapping/sampling as required on production and development drill patterns.
  • Communicate with shovel operators, Mine Supervisors/Dispatcher, and Plant personnel on ore quality and mine planning issues.
  • Communicate field issues to the Mine Planner to ensure accurate weekly/monthly plans are produced.
  • Attend daily/weekly meetings as required.
  • Produce daily grade control maps.
  • Complete monthly reconciliations of mine production to geological models.
  • Support the Technical Services team with any other duties/projects as required.
  • Perform inspections, job and task observations to ensure compliance to safety standards
  • Ensure that all safety standards, policies, and procedures follow: company policies, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Mining Regulations and Policies of other regulatory agencies and that these are adhered to in all circumstances.

Skills and Qualifications

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a technical role in a Mining environment 
  • Knowledge of all facets of the mining industry, including measurement and operations safety management and environmental regulations;
  • Strong PC skills, proficient in MS Office, Vulcan or other mine planning software programs
  • Strong communication skills;
  • Ability to meet deadlines;
  • Strong listening, questioning capabilities.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
  • Strong negotiation, listening, questioning capabilities.
  • Analytical and strategic thinker;

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences (Geology)

Physical Requirements

  • This position is a mixture of field work and office duties. Field work will be conducted daily throughout the year so exposure to the elements (rain, snow, cold, heat, etc) is to be expected. The office duties will require work in front of a laptop, desk, and phone.  The position requires periodic contact with Dispatch and Technical Services during off-hours.
