Position Overview

Under the direction of the Assistant Principal Culture of The Dean of Students, will support and lead in critical areas. The Dean of Students will be expected to lead by positive example, communicating high expectations for staff and students, and providing motivation to reach those expectations. This individual will also focus on the supervision of students, supervising students during arrival, departure, lunch, recess, passing periods, and other activities. This includes monitoring attendance, discipline, and instructing students on inappropriate behavior. The Dean of Students will work with other school leaders and staff to provide interventions and support for students' behavioral, social-emotional, attendance, and academic needs, including developing measurements of student behavior and coordinating student suspensions.


A core duty of the role is working with administrators, educators, coaches, parents, and student leadership groups to develop and maintain a positive and safe school culture. This could include encouraging diversity, professionalism, and integrity, as well as helping students learn to respect differences and take responsibility for their actions. Furthermore, this role includes assisting in administrative areas assigned by the immediate supervisor or principal, such as instructional improvement and student body activities.


Requirements:

Responsibilities

  • Working with staff to create a school climate based on respect, understanding, and high levels of academic and behavioral achievement
  • Ensuring all staff are using consistent behavior management practices that reflect school values and are relevant to our student's social/emotional/academic strengths and weaknesses
  • Establishing and implementing policies and procedures that are appropriate given the social, emotional, and cultural experiences of our scholars - developing, revising, and improving school rules and procedures (if necessary)
  • Developing protocols within the school's student handbook for preventing and managing crises among students or in the school
  • Making decisions regarding all student crises and ensuring accurate and timely follow-through with students, parents, and appropriate staff
  • Ensuring accurate and timely submission of data reports, discipline notices, and incident reports, as well as effective collaboration with students, parents, and staff on school-wide policies - sharing incident reports with the High School Administrative Team and inputting information into PowerSchool
  • Oversee the Behavior Orientation Intervention Program: Habits of Success and Decision Making for Success courses
  • Recommends and implements procedures and best practices to promote a safe and orderly school environment
  • Lead professional development for staff
  • Assisting with student movement throughout the school building as directed by the Principal (and designee) - maintaining high visibility in hallways, stairwells, and common spaces to discourage potentially disruptive behavior, intervening when necessary and required
  • Communicating with the Administrative Team, Culture Coordinators, Student Support Specialists, and Security Team to ensure that they receive critical details that may impact student behavior
  • Implementing de-escalation strategies to reduce and prevent elevated student behavior events
  • Serving as a member of the School Emergency Response Team
  • All other duties as assigned

Desired knowledge, skills, and abilities

  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and accomplish specific tasks as requested
  • Ability to intervene and resolve elevated student conflicts, school-wide disruptions, and/or crisis
  • Ability to climb stairs and spend long periods of time walking and standing;
  • Ability to meet the physical rigors of TACT2 training strategies
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality surrounding sensitive student information
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional and supportive relationships with students with the objective of supporting their educational goals

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (required) Master’s degree (preferred)
  • Five (5) or more years of experience working with opportunity youth in an educational setting
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Google Documents, and email
  • Experience managing the discipline of youth between the ages of 13 and 19
  • Experience with socio-emotional learning and behavior management (preferred)
  • Trained in TACT2 or willing and eligible to receive TACT2 training and certification (required)
