Job Description
The calendering lines at North American Calendering convert raw rubber into sheet form. The end products span many industries, ranging from tires, hoses, and gaskets to conveyor belts and belt splice materials. Types of calendered rubber include unsupported sheets, or sheet stocks and rubber-reinforced fabrics, known as friction-coats or skim-coats.

The Calender Operator is the lead role in the calendering line and is responsible for leading a team of up to 4 people on and around heavy machinery to process raw slabs of rubber into sheet form.

Job Functions
Follow Work Order instructions
o Lead the set up and break down of every Work Order
o Ensure product being produced is in conformance with the Work Order specifications
o Check gauge and width for conformance to Work Orders and make adjustments when necessary
o Adjust/maintain/check calender roll temperatures in conformance with Work Orders
  • Change motions on calender when necessary by changing keys on the top and bottom gears
o Produce skim coats, friction coats, ply-ups, and sheet stock, using such raw materials as CR, EPDM, FKM, NBR, NR, and SBR and aramid, cotton, nylon, and tire cord.
o Clean machine and surrounding area as prescribed on Clean Out State Machine and Clean Out Checklist

Complete and maintain all paperwork as necessary

o Record materials needed, used, and returned, including amounts (lbs, ft, yds), part numbers, batch IDs, and lot numbers in Work Order
o Enter completed roll information (part number, weight, length, date of manufacture) into ERP to produce unique, traceable lot numbers for each roll
Print roll labels and adhere them to each roll
o Ensure Line Technician is filling out Work Order
o Ensure Mill Operator is filling out Rubber Usage Forms
Manage a crew consisting of a Mill Operator, Line Technician, Quality Control
o Take lead in increasing throughput on the production line while maintaining quality of the product being produced
  • Refine and improve current production rates through efficiencies, tooling, and machinery and equipment where appropriate
Work and contribute as a member of a larger team
o Work with Production Supervisor on job scheduling
o Work cohesively with Engineering/Directors/Sales/Production in other areas of the business to promote on-time delivery

o Familiarize and increase knowledge of all calendering lines and how to increase efficiencies where possible
o Share ideas with Production Team (Supervisor/Plant Manager) on ways to improve performance and quality
o Perform other duties as assigned
Perform basic equipment maintenance

o Ensure the calenders are well lubricated and oil cans are full prior to running
o Ensure gears are being properly lubricated by checking oil sight gauges
o Check e-stops at the beginning of each shift
o Alert Supervisor and Maintenance for any needed repairs
  • Help clean and maintain a contamination-free environment

Incorporate Safety into all job functions

o Ensure that the equipment is operating in safe working conditions and is in conformance with OSHA Standards

o If something is not Safe it is everyones responsibility to See Something, Say Something to Production Supervisor/Plant Manager/Maintenance to get it addressed
o Raise awareness to Supervisor/Plant Manager/Leadership Team for potential areas of production opportunities/concern/exposure
