Middle School Liaison

The Oak Park Public Library seeks a confident, dynamic, and community-focused full-time Middle School Liaison to join our Middle & High School Services team.

Under the direction of the Manager of Middle & High School Services, the person selected for this position will advance the library’s vision, mission, and strategic direction by:
- Liaising with Oak Park and other area middle schools
- Providing customer service at library service desks
- Supporting library initiatives and projects, and
- Working collaboratively on library-wide projects across all service areas and with local middle schools and community youth organizations
Bilingualism in English and Spanish is a plus; while not required, fluency in Spanish will enable you to provide exceptional customer service and build relationships with our Spanish-speaking students and community members.
Note: The position title may be changed to Middle School Librarian if the person hired to fill the role has earned a Master's degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS).
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Community Engagement
- Establishes and maintains working relationships with the Middle and High School Services (MHS) Team, other library peers, community youth organizations and support systems, educators, middle school librarians, and resource staff to benefit middle schoolers
- Collaborates with schools, patrons, and partner agencies to support Oak Park Public Library, its tween patrons, and MHS team outcomes
- Provides programs and services for middle schoolers inside and outside the library
- Builds relationships with youth organizations and stakeholders to develop appropriate services for middle schoolers
Programming
- Develops clubs and programs for middle school students
- Develops, provides, and coordinates middle school programming in the schools, community, at the library and its branches
Service Points
- Provides direct customer service support on the public service desk, manages patron inquiries, and provides professional instruction and reference assistance when necessary
- Adheres to library policies and proactively enforces the A Library for Everyone policy
- Provides information on library and community news and events
- Engages students and enforces rules of behavior in the middle and high school spaces
Required Qualifications
- Understands, supports, and advances the vision, mission, and strategic priorities of the library
- Analytical and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail
- Verbal and written communication skills, including presentation skills. Ability to express oneself clearly and effectively to internal and external stakeholders
- Service-oriented and committed to providing exceptional service to our patrons, staff, and community
- High level of professionalism and integrity with the capacity to maintain confidentiality
- Proven ability with and knowledge of a wide range of technology, both physical and web-based, including but not limited to Windows PCs, social media, and common desktop applications
- Technical competence and a willingness to learn and grow in technical understanding
- Excellent interpersonal and project management skills
- Proven ability to exercise sound judgment and independent thinking
- Be able to communicate in English and Spanish fluently (a plus)
Education and Experience
Required
- Experience planning, creating content, and presenting programs designed for youth
- Experience collaborating with library staff, teachers, schools, and community youth organizations
Preferred
- Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field
- Master's degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited school
- Elementary/Middle School teaching experience
- Experience working in a public library
A combination of education, professional experience, and lived experiences that demonstrate the ability to meet the position's requirements successfully may be considered.
Details
This position is full-time, 40 hours per week.
As part of the total compensation package, library staff members receive generous benefits, including:
- 90% premium coverage for medical insurance for all tiers, along with access to dental and vision coverage
- Enrollment in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund (IMRF), a premier defined benefit (pension) plan for Illinois municipal government employees
