Position Summary:
Under general direction from the Dean for Student Success, the Career, Transfer and Academic Advisor will provide individualized support and wraparound services to underrepresented and underserved student populations to improve retention, persistence and achievement of academic goals. The Career, Transfer and Academic Advisor will be responsible for the full range of general counseling responsibilities, including assistance for academic planning, guidance, and advice to students.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Provide comprehensive academic advising, career and transfer planning services to students on a drop-in and appointment basis, as well as online, on the phone and at any SUNY Ulster campus site, as appropriate.
  • Develop individualized academic and career plans, and proactively provide academic and holistic supports that promote persistence, retention, and completion.
  • Serve as a partner advisor to a caseload of students; develop a deep knowledge of career pathways; develop a system for identifying and connecting with students.
  • Represent the college by participating in new student orientation and open house programs that highlight the importance of academic advising.  
  • Provide group advisement sessions, workshops, and other activities to support student academic progress.
  • Ensure timely and comprehensive response to Early Warnings and other notifications of issues impacting student success.
  • Serve as a resource for faculty advisors; and maintain appropriate documentation and records.
  • Provide job search assistance, including résumé and interviewing support; assist in coordination of on-site campus recruitment visits for employers and transfer institutions
  • Establish and maintain an internal referral network of college staff and faculty to support student success. 
  • Conduct registration and schedule adjustment activities as a partner advisor.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development activities in the field of academic advisement and educational planning, higher education student success, and cultural competency; attend conferences and training sessions.
  • Become proficient in all academic programs, including Continuing Education.
  • Serve on college committees; participate in professional organizations; and represent the College at regional and state meetings, as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Knowledge Base:
  • An understanding of the unique needs of students without identified educational goals or courses of study.
  • An understanding of the unique needs of first generation, underrepresented, and non-traditional students.
  • Familiarity with holistic, guided advising models that embed DEI principles.
  • Experience with designing and preparing advisement and transfer plans.
  • Knowledge of and experience utilizing college articulation agreements and transfer requirements for counseling community college students.
  • Proficiency in the operation and use of personal computers utilizing various software applications (i.e.: word processing, spreadsheet, and database management software, specialized software related assignment) including the internet.


Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  • Work independently and exercise discretionary judgement within the scope of responsibility; prioritize tasks and multi-task.
  • Maintain student advisement records, prepare reports and correspondence. Maintain the security of confidential information and materials. Maintain digital database records as well as physical records and files.
  • Learn, interpret, apply and explain College and state policies and procedures related to assignment.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with diverse constituencies within and outside of the College.
  • Use mature judgement, compassion, ethics, morals and character to inform decisions.
  • Analyze situations, problem solve, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed action, and implement an effective course of action.
  • Work 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM Monday through Friday. Work some evenings and weekends as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree.  Must have a minimum of two years’ experience in higher education counseling, advisement, or a related field.
  • Competency in a second language preferred but not required.

Salary:
Initial salary is $47,000 per year.

In addition, OPAP-covered members receive, on an annual basis: 24 vacation days, 12 sick days, 6 personal days, and 11 holidays including 4 floating holidays.  In addition, the College is closed on the day prior to Thanksgiving, and between December 26 - January, 1, known as the Holiday Curtailment.
