Job DescriptionJob DescriptionSalary: The annual salary range will likely fall between $125,000 for a candidate with 10 years of experience, and $135,000 for a candidate with 20 years of experience.

Who We Are

Columbia Legal Services (CLS) is a nonprofit civil legal aid organization that advances social, economic, and racial equity for people living in poverty. We support communities and movements by bringing deep legal expertise that is grounded in – and strongly guided by – an understanding of race equity.

We seek systemic solutions by bringing class action lawsuits, using cutting edge legal theories, engaging in policy advocacy, and supporting communities in building their own power. We have a special responsibility to serve people whose access to free legal services is restricted, due to institutionalized or immigration status.

At CLS we seek a team that reflects our organizational values of community, race equity, and justice. This includes hiring staff with connections to the communities we serve whenever possible, and a commitment to strive for justice and equity in our hiring practices and in our staff culture.

Summary

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Finance Director will lead all accounting and financial management and reporting activities, including budget development and analysis; accounting for investments, grants, and projects; accounts payable and receivable; general ledger; relationship management with accounting staff, banks and other vendors, and Board committees; and audit coordination. They will ensure that CLS has the systems and procedures in place to provide accurate financial information. They will work closely with all staff to educate them regarding finance and accounting procedures and to ensure that finance functions can support program operations.

This position is based out of the Seattle office. All CLS staff have the ability to complete some work remotely; however, this position will require some physical presence at the office.

CLS requires that all employees adhere to our COVID-19 vaccine mandate through proof of vaccination or by requesting a medical or religious accommodation. Staff are also required to follow CLS COVID-19 protocols while engaging in in-person work in our offices and in the community.

Responsibilities

The Finance Director’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Protecting and ensuring the integrity of program financial records by overseeing all financial transactions.
  • Safeguarding program assets.
  • Overseeing all financial, project/program, and grants accounting, including partnering with the Development team to ensure necessary reporting and compliance for donations, grants, and contracts.
  • Preparing, explaining, and coordinating information including program financial statements, budgets, reports, accounting policies and processes, tax returns and other information for use by the Executive Director, Leadership Team, the Board of Directors and its committees, and in-house union, as well as for funding sources, regulatory, governmental, and other entities.
  • Management, supervision, performance review and training of program accounting personnel.
  • Maintaining, implementing, and ensuring compliance with the organization’s systems of internal control and updating documentation thereof.
  • Serving with the Executive Director as the management members of the Audit/Budget Committee of Columbia Legal Services' Board of Directors.
  • Overseeing employee benefit programs in collaboration with the Operations Manager and Human Resources Director.
  • Coordinating all audit activity and communicating with independent auditors.
  • Managing and tracking organizational cash flow forecasting in conjunction with the Leadership Team.
  • Managing and tracking the performance of invested assets in keeping with Board policies and investment guidelines.
  • Ensuring Generally Accepted Accounting Principles are followed.
  • Providing strategic financial leadership for the organization and Board of Directors.

This job description is not designed to contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee, and others may be assigned.

Ability to translate complex financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with – individuals at all levels, including colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds.
  • A successful track record in setting priorities; excellent analytic, financial planning, and problem-solving skills to allow for strategic data interpretation and sound decision-making to ensure the long-term health and sustainability of the organization.
