Position Summary

The Recreation Coordinator is responsible for supporting daily operations of the Recreation Department; this includes staffing, support in recruitment efforts, employee development, training, direct service hours, sales, financial management, facilities management, and extensive member interaction. The Recreation Coordinator is also responsible for supporting program development and delivery including adult, youth, parent-child, summer camps/programs/leagues, rental groups, and partnerships.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in overseeing personnel in a productive professional manner

  • Support the Recreation Director in interviewing, hiring, training and developing staff.
  • Assist in the developing training, to the highest level of standards, as it relates to effectively running recreation and camp programs.
  • Gather staff availability and create staff schedules to include birthday party staffing.
  • Interact with employees in a sensitive, positive, and professional manner and document all necessary information.
  • Understand and use company policies and procedures.

Gym Supervision

  • Ensure that the JCC Gymnasium and Family Gymnasium are operational – help Recreation Director oversee the facilities upkeep including equipment on a regular basis.
  • Execute monthly physical inventory of recreation equipment with a high level of accuracy.
  • Ensure recreation closet, family gym closet, and volleyball closet are well maintained and accessible
  • Create and manage a check out system for recreation supplies/equipment
  • Manage member/community use of the Marcus & Family gym ensuring that all polices, and procedures are followed
  • Create and manage a weekly seasonal schedule for the Marcus & Family gym spaces ensuring that it accurate, posted, and updated on the JCC website
  • Interact with members/community using the Marcus & Family gym spaces daily

Direct service

  • Teach Recreation classes and/or directly participate in adult/youth leagues as necessary. This may also include travelling to county parks for softball needs, inputting statistics, officiating sports games, helping with Kids Center Vacation Days, and assisting with partnership specialty week camps as needed.
  • Support AM Rec Camp as needed to include covering for absent camp staff, leading activities and games, and travelling to the Water Park.
  • Ensure birthday parties and events are staffed
  • Collect inventory on birthday party supplies and communicate needs
  • Prepare class rosters and binders prior to the start of each programming session
  • Assist with entering classes into Traction Rec and enrollment questions.
  • Help set up, supervise and clean up pickleball programs as needed.
  • Assume the First responder and MOD (Manager On Duty) responsibilities for a minimum of one closing responsibility/week and a minimum of one federal holiday a year

Aquatics – (As needed)

  • Maintain American Red Cross Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor Certification
  • Lifeguard, teach Swim Lessons, and Coach Swim Team as needed throughout the year
  • Assist in the running of American Red Cross Courses
  • Train and serve as Water Park MOD (Manager on Duty) as needed

Additional responsibilities

  • Assume responsibilities as assigned for JCC special events.
  • Must actively promote and practice the organization’s Positive Rules of Communication.
  • Perform other duties and assume additional responsibilities as needed.

Education and/or Experience (*Preferred, but not required)

  1. Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Physical Education, Recreation, or other related field
  1. *Minimum of 3 years experience teaching and or administrating in recreation programs
  2. *Minimum of 1 year experience working in an aquatics related role
  3. *American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification required
  4. *American Red Cross CPR/AED/First Aid Instructor or Lifeguard Instructor Certification preferred

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee is occasionally required to sit; reach above shoulders; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, and swim. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.


Work Environment

  • The typical working hours of the position are Sunday through Thursday. Certain days and sessions throughout the year may require varying days/hours.
  • While performing the duties of this job, regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts.
  • The noise level in the environment is occasionally loud.
  • Programming will take place in a variety of weather conditions including rain and heat.
  • Ability to work a varied schedule to support the needs of the business, including frequent extended workdays, and weekends and holidays may be required.
