SUMMARY:

Perform those functions delegated and assigned by the registered nurse as appropriate. Assist physicians with endoscopy and surgical procedures as dictated by BMEC.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Consistently applies the Brown Medicine values of patient care priority, dignity, collaboration, integrity and quality in support of the Brown Medicine mission to deliver compassionate, high-quality patient care, research excellence and outstanding physician education. Is responsible for knowing and acting in accordance with the Brown Medicine Compliance Program and Code of Conduct.

  • Assist the Registered Nurse and physician to provide pre-, intra- and post-operative care to patients; acts as an advocate in the coordination of patient care.
  • Deliver direct nursing care to patients utilizing the nursing process.
  • Demonstrate performance, understanding, and interpretation of diagnostic measures such as lab tests, radiology exams, EKGs, etc.
  • Assist in admitting and preparing patients for procedures.
  • Perform technical and specialized skills during procedures.
  • Prepare rooms, equipment and supplies to accommodate the patient load.
  • Assist physician with procedures.
  • Monitor patient before, during and after procedure. Applies appropriate monitoring equipment.
  • Administer medications as directed by the physician under the guidelines of the Rhode Island State Board of Nursing.
  • Provide patient education.
  • Document on all forms as required.
  • Utilize supplies, equipment and resources to contains costs without compromising delivery of care.
  • Implements infection prevention measures and environmental safety.
  • Safety practices as demonstrated through room preparation and high-level disinfection practices.
  • Report and documents information accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Communicates a positive and caring attitude towards patient, physicians, staff, and all other contacts
  • Seek guidance, direction and assistance where needed. Follow policies and procedures at all times and is an active participant in the QI program.
  • Maintain confidentiality/privacy/security of all patients and BMEC’s communications/documents.
  • Gain knowledge of all equipment and supplies and is familiar with their location, especially emergency rugs, supplies and equipment. Participate in staff meetings, and In-services (mandatory and regular).
  • Demonstrate flexibility in patient care, assignment, schedule and needs of BMEC.
  • Supervise employees with lesser qualifications and delegates duties to them according to qualifications, skills, education and competency
  • Maintain a clean, pleasant and safe environment for self/other employees and patients/visitors.
  • Participate in continuing education programs.
  • Participate on committees as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Ability to maintain open and positive communication with other health professionals, patients and families.
  • Exhibit professionalism always.
  • Adhere to HIPAA to maintain confidentiality of patient and personnel information.
  • Good command of the English language, both verbal and written.
  • Strong clinical skills specific to the endoscopy environment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of Professional School of Nursing; LPN.
  • State Licensure as an LPN with previous experience in GI/endoscopy preferred.
  • Current certification in BLS.
  • Evidence of continuing education.
