Receiving and Special Testing Technician

Description: The Food Quality Test Technician will work closely with all department and under the direction of quality management to ensure the quality to ensure the safety, quality and functionality of raw material coming into the facility, prior to use. This role will also perform special testing, develop processes and perform training to new processes or testing with team members to reduce food safety and quality non-conformance.

Reports To: Director of Quality Assurance and Food Safety

Primary Work Area: Receiving Docks, Quality Labs, Production Floors

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in food science, quality engineering, or related science field.
  • Minimum 1 year in quality assurance and/or continuous improvement project management.
  • HACCP Certification (preferred)
  • PCQI Certification (preferred)

Work Hours:

40-45 hours per week (Monday - Friday):

Office Standard Hours: Between 7:00am - 4:00pm

**May require occasional off shift hours**


Core Responsibilities:

  • Review, approve and file CoAs for all raw materials prior to, or at time of arrival.
  • Perform routine inspections of all raw material pallets coming into the facility to ensure proper food safety and labeling before being allowed to enter facility.
  • Work cross functionally to identify key characteristics for raw materials coming into the facility to ensure usability and identify and develop testing methods to measure the characteristics. Examples may be salt level in seasonings, moisture levels in frying materials, fiber content in flours.
  • Establish routine sampling and testing of raw materials and packaging to ensure consistency of key characteristics of raw materials. Developing SOPs and training as needed on activities.
  • Work with document control to ensure only approved suppliers' materials are received.
  • Create and maintain lists for approved suppliers, identity preserved and allergen statuses.
  • Review routine reports for raw material shelf life and work with suppliers to evaluate risks and ability to extend shelf life prior to expiration.
  • Identify, develop and lead routine validation and verifications activities. Examples: validations - allergen cleaning capability, sanitation, and net weight scale capability. Verifications - NIR capability / accuracy, lab equipment accuracy, NFPs,
  • Work with R&D and Production teams to identify new testing, equipment and measures to reduce quality and food safety related downtime throughout the plant. This may include items such as:
  • Working with production and R&D to identify new testing needed to ensure consistency of materials in process.
  • Performing validity studies on new and current testing and methods to validate the need for activities.
  • Re-evaluating current testing methods and/or SOPs for areas for improvement.
  • Verifying consistency of testing execution across all departments and shifts.
  • Assist in R&D trials to compile setting and test result information to improve first production success.
  • Perform data analysis and monitor activities and key quality and production metrics to identify and execute on identified opportunities for improvement.
  • Oversee establishment and maintenance of gold standards for finished goods and packaging.
  • Assist in routine lab activities as requested.

  • Position may require some weekends, split-shifts, and occasional off-shift work.
