Washington, United States Active Minds Full time
Job DescriptionJob Description

About the Active Minds Internship Program

Active Minds is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization changing the culture around mental health. Through our presence at more than 1,000 high school and college campuses, in corporate settings, and with a wide-reaching public audience, Active Minds is creating communities of support and saving lives. Founded in 2003 by Alison Malmon after the tragic suicide of her brother Brian, Active Minds is dedicated to supporting a new generation in ending the silence, helping to make mental health as highly valued as physical health. Through our many programs – including the emotionally gripping Send Silence Packing® traveling exhibit and our compelling Active Minds Speakers – we are changing culture and behaviors related to mental health across the country.

Our internships are geared towards current college students and recent college graduates.  As a small nonprofit, Active Minds relies on the help of our interns tremendously as they work directly on important initiatives and projects as well as assist staff on a variety of administrative tasks.  Interns have the opportunity to do substantive work, gain experience in the nonprofit sector, and help change the culture around mental health.

All Fall 2024 internships will be remote with an anticipated start date of September 16, 2024 and end date of November 29, 2024. We expect interns to work a minimum of 20 hours a week, set a consistent work schedule between 9:00am and 5:00pm EST Monday - Friday, and commit to staying on board for the entire semester.

Active Minds pays interns a stipend of $1,250 per month.

Community Programs Internship

The Community Programs intern will collaborate with both our Send Silence Packing Team (SSP) and our Speakers Team to effectively engage communities and initiate the conversation around mental health.

Rooted in a dynamic story-sharing format displayed through mixed mediums, Send Silence Packing (SSP) is an immersive experience that illustrates the stories and centers the voices of youth as they guide us through their mental health journeys to end the silence surrounding suicide. Now entering its 15th year on the road, SSP has connected more than 1,000,000 visitors in over 350 communities with resources and tools for skills and support. The exhibit serves as a mobilizing force to change the way we think, talk, and feel about mental health, and (perhaps most importantly,) how we show up for the people around us.

The members of our speaker's bureau share their personal stories to show that mental health struggles are common and there is both strength and hope in reaching out for help. Their relatable presentations interweave key mental health messages, creating an inspiring and educational experience for multiple audiences. Through the impactful Send Silence Packing exhibit and the personal narratives shared by our speakers, we aim to break down stigmas, promote understanding, and cultivate a supportive environment where everyone feels comfortable discussing mental health openly.

Our Community Programs intern will play a pivotal role in collaborating closely with our Program Associates, to execute and implement the newly updated SSP exhibit and ensure the speaker's events during the fall season are set up for success. Some key responsibilities may include: event coordination, moderating virtual events, communication with speakers and clients, administrative tasks, crafting a yearly report, helping with SSP tour execution, email and marketing campaigns, and additional projects as assigned.

The Community Programs Interns are valued members of the team who support the mission and vision of our work through a variety of projects in ways both big and small.
