Job DescriptionJob DescriptionDescriptionThe job duties of the Corrections Sergeant include but are not limited to assist with the overall supervision of the County Jail; to ensure that the living conditions of the inmates are maintained in a humane manner; to ensure that the inmates are granted their constitutional rights; to coordinate and oversee the training of all the correction officers and evaluate their work; ; to enforce all federal, state, and local law resolutions; and to provide responsive, courteous and efficient service to County residents and the general public. In the absence of the Corrections Lieutenant, the Corrections Sergeant is in charge of the facility and will perform all duties of the Corrections Lieutenant. Performs other duties as assigned.
The duties described below are indicative of what the Corrections Sergeant might be asked to perform. This job description is to incorporate any County Resolutions for the position of Corrections Sergeant. Inmate Security. Record all requests and activities of inmates including medical problems, medication, etc. Monitors jail activities via video monitors in control room, monitor recreation activities, chaplain visits, meetings such as AA, library program. Monitors jail visitation and take prisoners back and forth from visitation. Checks prisoners on a half-hour basis. Conducts routine shakedowns, pat searches and strip searches of inmates. Issues clean uniforms and bedding to inmates. Serves meals to prisoners. Dispenses commissary items as ordered by inmates. Monitor medical status of prisoners. Dispenses medications and notify physician of medical needs. Maintains the jail in a good clean order. Book-In. Books in and processes inmates in and out of jail. Fingerprints and photographs inmates. Maintain accounting for prisoner money and possessions.Transports. Transports and secures inmates to and from court, hospitals and doctor and other law enforcement agencies. Assists in coordinating transport and security for inmates transported to and from court, hospitals, doctors, and attorneys.Administrative Tasks. Meets the public at the detention center and supervise visiting hours and AA meetings. Makes minor plumbing repairs, replace light bulbs and make adjustments to equipment. Orders jail supplies required for operations. Works with investigators and internal investigations as required on jail matters. Coordinates maintenance of the facility and supporting equipment. Reviews staff data entries into the computerized inmate book in and release records. Enters data into the same records. Reviews, evaluates and takes appropriate action on grievance forms received from inmates. Reviews, evaluates, approves or disapproves staff requests for disciplinary action toward the inmates. Reviews, evaluates and takes appropriate action on incident reports received from the jail staff. Ensures that the inmates’ privileges are not unjustly restricted. Reviews all paperwork, such as status reports, cell assignment check sheets, shift logs, and telephone logs. Responds to worksite in emergency situations at any time. Supervises inmate programs such as AA and NA meetings, work release, and inmate worker (Trustee). Utilizes the Livescan computerized fingerprinting system to prepare fingerprints and transmit them to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. Utilizes the two-way video court system for some of the court appearances of the inmates. Maintains the inmate monetary accounts. Operates the inmate commissary, maintain commissary records, order supplies, establish prices on items sold and post the transactions to the inmate monetary accounts. Provides crowd control when needed.Supervisory Functions. Supervise staff in planning work, assignment of tasks, evaluation of work performed, preparation of evaluations, administering corrective actions, interviewing and selecting staff, training, ensuring work is done in accordance with safety protocols and recommending employee transfers, promotions, discharge and salary increases. Develop and implement policies as required.
RequirementsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required at the time of hire or for the continuation of employment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of experience of law enforcement or jail.A valid Kansas driver’s license.
  • Must reside within a 60-mile radius of worksite within 90 days of employment.
  • Training and certifications to be completed within one (1) year of employment and maintained throughout employment: Certification through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center, Correctional Supervisors Course, Tazer certification, CPR certification, and first aid treatment certification.

PREFERRED QUALIFCATIONS· Technical degree or Associate’s degree in criminal justice preferred.· One (1) year of supervisory experience.
