FULL TIME - GENERAL MAINTENANCE/EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS - STREETS - UWUA L#542

JOB SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine semi-skilled and skilled duties in the maintenance, repair, and construction of infrastructures; operates and maintains a variety of equipment.

ILLUSTRATIVE JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or logical assignment to the class.

  1. Repair, construction, maintenance, and inspection of street infrastructure in accordance with accepted practices and procedures.
  2. Operate equipment in the performance of duties of patching, painting/striping, sweeping.
  3. Performs seasonal maintenance activities including ice and snow removal, salting, and other winter maintenance using specialized winter maintenance equipment.
  4. Performs traffic control as needed for variety of city projects in accordance with standard practices and procedures.
  5. Assist with the maintenance of bridges as needed.
  6. Fabricate, install, remove and maintain signs used in traffic control and variety of other city needs.
  7. Inspects equipment, fuels vehicles, checks fluid levels, replace fluids, greases equipment, washes/cleans equipment
  8. Use a computer to enter and retrieve information related to work assignments and record keeping
  9. Within the parameters of the must current collective bargaining agreement, responds to public emergencies, including those which occur outside of normal business hours.
  10. Maintains a clean, safe, and professional work environment.
  11. Provide customer service, courteously respond to inquiries, provide information within the area of assignment, and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner. Follow up within the scope of authority, make recommendations, and/or refer to a foreman or department manager as necessary.
  12. Prepares reports and maintains records as directed.
  13. Performs related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties.

Knowledge of:

  • Occupational hazards and safety practices as it relates to this type of work.

Ability to:

  • Perform job duties with proper safety work methods and procedures.
  • Understand maps/drawings/blueprints/GIS mapping.
  • Maintain composure and exercise good judgement when answering demanding questions.
  • Make operating adjustments and to recognize operating deficiencies in assigned equipment.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationship with employees, contractors, and the public.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions in an independent manner.
    • Follow established safety procedures, utilize safety equipment, and monitor work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.
  • Must possess time management skills with the ability to work with numerous interruptions and work effectively under time constraints to meet deadlines.
  • Must be willing and able to be on call during regular work week, including weekends, and to report for work after hours if needed.

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants with prior licensure and/or relevant work experience within the City of Bay City will receive preference.

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Knowledge of operating forklifts, platforms, backhoes, and excavators.
  • Must possess a minimum CDL Class B endorsement.
  • Must have considerable prior experience in plowing operations preferably with municipal equipment.
  • Must have and wear protective footwear. Footwear must provide toe protection for impact, compression and puncture (as needed) resistance. Must cover employee's ankle and be a minimum 6". Must meet standards per U.W.U.A Local 542 contract.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated proficiency in computer systems and related technologies.

Additional Job Requirements (to be obtained within six months of job acceptance):

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Michigan CDL, Class "A," with airbrakes endorsement. (Preference will be given to those with a CDL, Class "A")
  • Forklift Operator License
  • Backhoe, excavator, and front-wheel loader operator license
  • Aerial training within 6 months
  • IMSA, or city equivalent, sign and pavement marking level 1
  • IMSA, or city equivalent, temporary traffic control
