Position overview:

The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for providing overall leadership and technical support to other staff and quality control personnel.  Additionally, the Senior Civil Engineer shall provide support for engineering studies, design reviews and analysis and shall have completed the OSHA 30-hour course or similar safety training courses in excavations/trenching, scaffolding and fall protection, confined spaces, lifting/loading equipment. This project will be supporting maintenance, alteration and repairs, base building utility equipment systems upgrades, grounds and civil engineering systems projects on NIST campuses. 

This project is contingent upon award.

Responsibilities and duties:

  • Supervise staff engineers and technicians of all levels.
  • Oversee engineering projects with facility design and construction projects.
  • Provide leadership developing, planning and engineering studies and analysis
  • Plan project coordination and management.
  • Perform evaluation of alternatives and risks and costs.
  • Provide technical experience
  • Analyze problems efficiently and provides viable solutions within established schedule and budget.

Required education, knowledge and skills:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction, or related field 
  • 12+ years related experience including new construction and renovations
  • Knowledge and experience with standards and practices for civil or mechanical engineering designs and soil and foundation analysis for horizontal and vertical construction
  • Average agility and dexterity. Duties will include moderate walking over rough, uneven or slippery surfaces, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, climbing ladders or similar activities, recurring lifting of moderately heavy objects less than 50 lbs. and regular visits to construction sites.
  • Ability to acquire a security clearance.
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Travel and relocation may be required
