Schedule consists of four 10-hour shifts, 6:00am-4:30pm Monday-Thursday (every Friday off)


SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs meter reading services and completes work orders generated by the Public Utilities; provides assistance with utility customer services and utility billing process; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Install and perform basic repairs on residential water meters.
  • Resolve problems with water meter installation
  • Complete work orders related to service connections and disconnections.
  • Handle resident complaints pertaining to various water system problems; conduct tests to identify problems and determine appropriate steps for resolution.
  • Disconnect water service for customer homes with delinquent billings.
  • Assist Utility Billing by locating water meters at various sites, utilize maps, charts, and plan information.
  • Resolve problems identified by Utah Risk Management Mutual Association; perform random check of all meter boxes and identify meters needing repair or replacement.
  • Operate a variety of hand and power, plumbing and pipe fitting tools.
  • Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Experience: One year experience in water works, equipment operation, construction, or closely related field.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Utah Driver's License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Operational characteristics of meter reading equipment and tools.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices necessary in meter reading and repair.
  • Basic map reading.
  • Principles and practices used in dealing with the public.
  • Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment.
  • Principles and procedures of record keeping and reporting.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • English usage.
  • Safe driving principles and practices.

Skill with:

  • Operating light maintenance equipment including trimmers, water pumps, hand tools, and other related maintenance equipment.
  • Operating modern office equipment including computer equipment and software.
  • Operating a motor vehicle safely.

Ability to:

  • Accurately and efficiently take meter readings.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate and complete records.
  • Perform mathematical calculations at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • Read a map, locate addresses, and follow a prescribed route and schedule.
  • Interpret and apply the policies, procedures, laws, and regulations pertaining to meter reading programs and functions.
  • Meet and deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the public.
  • Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crawl, and lift, push, or pull 25 lbs.; exposure to unpleasant and hazardous working conditions caused by water, noise, dust, heavy equipment, toxic fumes, traffic, heights, and high voltage equipment; work in trenches, vaults, and manholes; ability to travel to different sites and locations.
