POSITION SUMMARY

Under general oversight, this role involves executing meter reading services and fulfilling work orders initiated by the Public Utilities. The technician will assist with utility customer services and the utility billing process while engaging in various technical tasks related to their assigned responsibilities.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not have supervisory duties.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Install and conduct basic repairs on residential water meters.
  • Address issues related to water meter installations.
  • Complete service connection and disconnection work orders.
  • Manage resident complaints regarding water system issues; perform tests to diagnose problems and determine appropriate resolutions.
  • Terminate water service for residences with overdue payments.
  • Assist Utility Billing by locating water meters across various sites, utilizing maps and charts.
  • Resolve issues identified by the Utah Risk Management Mutual Association; conduct random inspections of meter boxes and identify meters requiring repair or replacement.
  • Utilize a range of hand and power tools, plumbing, and pipe fitting equipment.
  • Perform additional related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: High school diploma or GED.

Experience: At least one year of experience in water works, equipment operation, construction, or a closely related field.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Valid Utah Driver's License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

  • Operational characteristics of meter reading equipment and tools.
  • Occupational hazards and standard safety practices relevant to meter reading and repair.
  • Basic map reading skills.
  • Principles and practices for effective public interaction.
  • Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment.
  • Record keeping and reporting procedures.
  • Basic mathematical principles.
  • English language usage.
  • Safe driving practices.

Skills in:

  • Operating light maintenance equipment including trimmers, water pumps, hand tools, and other related equipment.
  • Using modern office equipment and software.
  • Safely operating a motor vehicle.

Ability to:

  • Accurately and efficiently read meters.
  • Maintain precise and complete records.
  • Perform necessary mathematical calculations for job success.
  • Read maps, locate addresses, and adhere to a prescribed route and schedule.
  • Interpret and apply policies, procedures, laws, and regulations related to meter reading.
  • Engage tactfully and effectively with the public.
  • Respond to public inquiries and requests.
  • Establish and maintain positive working relationships with contacts encountered during work.
  • Work independently without supervision.
  • Understand and follow both oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crawl, and lift, push, or pull up to 25 lbs. Exposure to challenging working conditions such as water, noise, dust, heavy equipment, toxic fumes, traffic, heights, and high voltage equipment. Work may involve trenches, vaults, and manholes, and requires travel to various locations.
