The Practice Manager of Shelter Medicine reports directly to the Director of Shelter Medicine under the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of the Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) and St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center. This role will involve leading and directing the HRA medical support program in Washington D.C. with an ethic of inclusivity and collaboration. This individual will be tasked with supervising clinic processes within the organization that supports adoptions, field services, and emergency response to animals in HRA’s care. The Practice Manager of Shelter Medicine will serve as an operational leader within the shelter’s medical department, ensuring that excellent care is provided to animals in custody of HRA with a goal of continuous improvement and expansion of treatment options.

To successfully perform their duties in this role, a candidate should possess:

  • Knowledge of basic management principles, as it relates to shelter veterinary practices.
  • Knowledge of various veterinary procedures including but not limited to catheter placement and management, fluid administration, drug calculations, surgical anesthesia and monitor, surgical prep and recovery, management of emergency situations, radiographs, skin scrapes, urine analysis, fecal analysis, cytology of various kinds, blood tests, wound care, and triage.
  • Knowledge of veterinary practice management in private practice or shelter medicine.
  • The skill to review, assess and/or prepare budgets for approval, including those for funding or implementation of in-shelter medical needs.
  • Ability to train others in technical medical processes and procedures, and to build skills of staff at all levels.
  • Ability to thrive in a busy and rapidly changing environment, while providing direction and leadership to medical staff
  • Ability to effectively communicate and work collaboratively with veterinarians, including vets employed by HRA and community veterinary partners.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administrative Oversight:
    • Manage day-to-day operations of HRA’s shelter medicine program.
    • Supervise reception staff, billing, scheduling, and medical records.
    • Implement policies and procedures to guide staff with minimal error.
    • Provide reports and program updates as requested.
    • Development and adherence to budget and revenue goals.
    • Management of facility and staff licenses and certifications.
    • Medical inventory management.
  • Shelter Medical Clinic Programs:
    • Oversee the shelter euthanasia program, monitoring staff progress and managing euthanasia schedule for both DC locations.
    • Ensure surgical and clinic schedules for veterinarians and support staff to meet the needs of shelter operations.
  • Staff Management and Development:
    • Monitor and review staff performance, providing feedback and coaching.
    • Issue performance improvement plans (PIP) to support team member growth.
    • Conduct training sessions to enhance technical medical processes and procedures.
  • Logistics and Coordination:
    • Manage the flow of animals to ensure their medical needs are met promptly.
    • Meet with donors, HRA Board, and the public to share information about medical clinic services.
    • Collaborate with other departments to increase the technical skills and medical understanding of staff, volunteers, and the public.
    • Collaborate with other departments to develop and maintain surrender diversion programs.
  • Professional Representation:
    • Represent HRA in a professional and courteous manner.
    • Provide quality service to the public, volunteers, and employees.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    • Perform other duties as assigned, including participation in shelter operations duties such as customer care and animal care duties as needed.

  • Due to nature of shelter work, may be exposed to deceased, fractious, or aggressive animals; hostile or irate persons; zoonotic or other diseases; unpleasant noises, odors, or sights; and extreme temperatures.
  • Availability and ability to work occasional weekend or weeknight hours.

Qualifications, Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in veterinary medicine and/or Business Administration or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Proven experience in animal welfare or an operational field, with a demonstrated progression in a leadership role(s).
  • Demonstrated strong program and project management skills that yielded positive outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and inspire diverse teams toward achieving common goals.
