OVERVIEW:

As a phlebotomist, you will be the one who draws blood from patients, collects a variety of other specimen samples as well as label the blood vials that you have filled. You will also be responsible for bringing all blood and specimen samples to the laboratory either in the hospital you are working in, or locally in the area.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  1. Responsible for the collection of materials or specimens taken from the human body
  2. Posses sufficient academic, technical, and clinical skills and knowledge to evaluate, troubleshoot, research, and resolve day-to-day problems
  3. Near visual acuity is required to read detailed instructions and examine specimens
  4. With proper instructions must be able to perform waived testing

RESPONSIBILITIES/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  1. Always identifies correct in-inpatient of all ages by comparing name and medical record number on requisition with name and medical record number on the patient wristband before a procedure is performed
  2. Always identifies correct out-patients of all ages by requesting the patient (or guardian) to state his/her full name and comparing that with the name on the requisition
  3. Consistently draws blood properly using established laboratory procedures (i.e., proper patient identification, proper tube selection, etc.); rarely fails to obtain blood sample on the first attempt
  4. Always verifies and collects proper samples required to specific tests
  5. Initials, dates and records time blood, urine or culture collected on all laboratory requisition forms
  6. Accurately labels specimens (patient’s name, medical record number, initials date and time collected)
  7. Correctly logs all patient and specimen collection records in the respective Phlebotomy Log (i.e., for IP, ER, OP, etc.)
  8. Maintains awareness of timed specimen’s collection and their importance and attempts to collect these specimens at appropriate time (i.e., Glucose, Isoenzymes, Drugs, Blood Cultures, Hemograms, etc.)
  9. Properly instructs out-patients of all ages, in the correct way to collect urine specimens
  10. Correctly processes all lab requisitions, forms, and specimens for routine and reference tests
  11. Consistently completes duties neatly, accurately and in a timely manner
  12. Enforces and follows all laboratory safety rules and reports any possible hazards to the Chief Medical Technologist
  13. Shares appropriate communication with other laboratory personnel involving difficult Venipuncture, timed specimens, etc.
  14. Keeps the Phlebotomy area neat, clean, and well stocked with supplies
  15. Keep blood drawing trays neat, clean, and well supplied
  16. Consistently completes routine blood draw withing 10 minutes
  17. Assists other laboratory personnel as workload permits without being requested
  18. Consistently determines proper priorities when organizing daily tasks and can adjust schedule in view of STAT’s out-patient and time draws
  19. Organizes work for effective utilization of time
  20. Refers to appropriate policy and procedure manuals as necessary and communicates with reference labs for proper specimen requirements
  21. Utilizes supplies equipment in a non-wasteful manner
  22. Readily assists other laboratory personnel when requested
  23. Accepts responsibility for and becomes available to work a different shift when workload and/or other conditions warrant
  24. Can perform all tasks assigned to the Phlebotomist
  25. Responds to changes in work schedule as necessary or as requested
  26. Greets patients in a courteous manner, responds to patients with empathy and positive interpersonal skills
  27. Recognizes and can effectively function within the Laboratory and Hospital organizational structure
  28. Perform any other duties that may be necessary for the operation of the corporation and/or hospital
Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High School Diploma
  2. Training in formal phlebotomy program which includes a minimum of sixty hours of didactic training and sixty hours of clinical experience
  3. Previous job experiences as a phlebotomist
  4. Must be eligible for certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Frequent mobility and/or sitting required for extended periods of time
  2. Manual dexterity and use of a calculator or computer keyboard.
  3. Varied activities including standing, walking, reaching, bending, lifting
  4. Occasionally lifts to 25 pounds
  5. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal ranges
  6. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours
  7. Exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionization radiation, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a hospital and/or clinic environment
