TITLE: Mentor Teacher Coach PROGRAM: Head Start

CLASS: Non-Exempt

REPORTS TO: Head Start Director

JOB SUMMARY: The Mentor Coaches will provide on-site coaching for Head Start Teachers, Teacher Assistants, and Center Supervisors in order to improve child outcomes toward School Readiness. The Mentor Coach will conduct classroom activity assessments; implement small group trainings and discussion groups for teacher on various research-based child development topics; hands on modeling techniques; provides feedback and professional development guidance; discusses analysis of CLASS data; provides coaching/mentoring in order for teachers to improve teacher-child interactions; provide instructional support to Head Start teachers. The Mentor Coach will also work in collaboration with the Child Development Manager in order to ensure classroom implementation, meets and exceeds mandates from federal and state agencies, as well as local licensing agencies and Quality Rating. The Mentor Coach will ensure the effective integration and interdisciplinary work of all aspects of the program work into the educational services for children

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Work jointly with the Child Development Manager, Education Specialist, and teaching staff to determine focus areas based on compiled classroom data from CLASS, child outcomes, and Brigance.
  2. Assist Child Development Manager with the analysis of data input in Teaching Strategies Gold.
  3. Plan and assist teaching staff to implement educational experiences for preschool children, parent trainings, and parent involvement in the education program both in the classroom and at home.
  4. Assist teachers to develop a program that is responsive to the needs of each individual child and family.
  5. Assist teachers in resource development and administration in making child observations within the classroom.
  6. Provides reflective supervision, coach and mentor the Teacher to ensure the implementation of the education program reflects Coastal Plain Area EOA, Inc. philosophy and curriculum.
  7. Coaches and mentor educational staff to identify and achieve professional development goals.
  8. Tracks CDA’s of Teacher Assistants and ensures they are renewed in a timely manner.
  9. Facilitates and coordinates meetings and trainings as assigned or in coordination with

the Child Development Manager

  1. Coaches and mentor educational staff on curriculum topics, areas observed, data priorities and teachers request.
  2. Ensures all training requirements are met by education staff according to HS Performance Standards and Bright from the Start.
  3. Follow up on outside consultant's training, mentoring and coaching.
  4. Meets regularly with immediate supervisor and attends all meeting and training sessions, as requested.
  5. In conjunction with the Family Health Advocate ensure Focus of The Child reviews are held and monitor follow-up process.
  6. Ensure the integration of all Service Areas are maintained
  7. Monitors and ensures education plans and other required documentation for children and classroom is completed; Meet regularly with Education Manager and Education Specialist.
  8. Regularly completes and documents classroom observations as required.
  9. Assist in the preparation of the budget, and recommend allocation of funds for educational materials and supplies as needed to assist in classroom
  10. Participates in the development of program policies, service delivery plans, and ongoing monitoring of program quality
  11. Ensure the use of child and classroom data in lesson planning and individualization.
  12. Along with the Education Manager conduct data review meetings with teaching teams and develop plans for use of data
  13. Ensures all assigned program reports are completed and submitted on a timely basis.
  14. Coordinates evaluations and outcomes assessments with Education Manager and coordinate feedback to teaching teams.
  15. Ensures all mandates of Head Start performance standards, State and local licensing are met.
  16. Ensures all confidential information is protected.
  17. Participates in recruitment efforts of program to help maintain full program enrollment.
  18. Attend classroom team meetings
  19. Attends all required program, regional and state meetings and trainings; including supervisory trainings as requested.
  20. Collaborates with Family Health Advocates and the Center Supervisors to develop effective partnership with families by addressing parents' concerns.
  21. To supervise the implementation of the planned activities in accordance with the Head Start Performance Standards.
  22. Assist in the preparation of the budget and recommend allocation of funds for educational materials and supplies.
  23. Participate in the conduct and analysis of the Community Needs Assessment.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of the job description.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development or Elementary Education, with pre-school certification. Degrees in other fields may be accepted, or with a minimum of five (5) years’ experience will be considered.
  2. Must Obtain and Maintain CLASS Reliable Observer Certificate
  3. A minimum of two (2) years teaching ages 5 and under, with appropriate degree, techniques, and concepts.
  4. Knowledge of and ability to implement early childhood curriculum and developmentally appropriate practice for the specific age group (birth to five) and be able to remain abreast of developments in the child development field.
  5. Knowledge of appropriate classroom management techniques for preschool classrooms and reflective practice mentor/coaching strategies
  6. Must have excellent communication skills and be a responsive and objective listener.
  7. Must have strong interpersonal and people skills and be able to relate to children and families.
  8. Must be cooperative and display a positive attitude toward working as a team with other staff members.
  9. Must have empathy for low-income children and families.
  10. Must understand and respect confidential information regarding children, families and the program.
  11. Must exercise discretion and sound judgement in the performance of assigned duties.
  12. Must have a current driver’s license and have access to use of an automobile with current insurance.
  13. Must be willing to attend all pertinent meetings and training, and travel to all Head start centers on a regular basis.
  14. Must have knowledge of communities which program serves.
