TITLE: Environment & Outdoors Program Specialist

REPORTS TO: Director of Program Impact

HOURS OF OPERATION: Mon/Wed/Fri - 12:00-5:00pm, Tue/Thurs - 1:30-6:30pm, Summer; TBD, Weekends; as needed

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

The vision of Boys and Girls Clubs of America is to provide a world-class Club Experience that assures success is within reach of every young person we serve, on track to graduate high school, and with a plan for the future. The mission of BGCDT is to enable our kids to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible adults. Our Board of Directors has further directed our team to ensure that our Club alumni become distinguished in the community as readily employable and prepared for success in life. To meet these goals, our programs need to provide enrichment activities and support beyond what is offered by our school system and our families. Our call to action is to deliver programs that go above and beyond for our members. Offering the minimum or accepting the status quo is not good enough for them.

The Environment and Outdoors Program is an innovative initiative aimed at youth, fostering awareness of nature, sustainable living, and outdoor skills, while also highlighting career opportunities in environmental sciences. The Environment and Outdoors Program Specialist oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of experiences for elementary and middle school members, emphasizing appreciation of the outdoors, understanding environmental challenges, sustainable living, camping skills, program management, and work effectively with established community partners. The Environment and Outdoors Program Specialist ensures activities meet program standards and collaborates with team members for overall success.

KEY ROLES (Essential Job Responsibilities):

Program Planning, Development, and Implementation

  • Working with the CEO and Director of Program Impact, develop and implement an annual program planning process, including program goals and objectives, with monthly and weekly program schedules for the elementary and middle school sites.
  • Identify, propose, and plan for changes in the experiences arising from members’ feedback and needs.
  • Create and submit experience plan sheets on a weekly basis.
  • Manage monthly reports using the Key Performance Indicator(KPI) tracker.
  • Establish and maintain co-ed Webelos Cub Scout Packs for each of the six BGC Elementary School Clubs in Carpentersville for 4th/5th grade members.
  • Establish and maintain co-ed Outdoor Exploring Clubs at AMS and CMS.
  • Plan and develop an outdoor activity center at the new Woodlands Impact Center for weekend overnight camping activities.
  • Host adult leader training sessions to develop parents as program volunteers.
  • Assist with member recruitment initiatives to increase participation in the EOP.
  • Develop an indoor hydroponic, outdoor garden, and other programs as a fundraiser and service project for the Scouting units.
  • Maintain close contact with BGCDT field staff to support overall program management as needed, and explain program objectives, to guarantee and continuous quality improvement process.

Finance

  • Develop and manage the program budget and make recommendations for expenditures to purchase supplies and equipment.
  • Complete monthly assessment of budget versus actual expenditures for the EOP program.

Community Partnerships

  • Plan and facilitate special field trips, canoe trips, and environmental education programs with The Friends of the Fox.
  • Engage with community partners to provide resources to help develop and support the program.
  • Develop and manage collaborative partnerships with local community partners to enhance and support the program.
  • Maintain contact with external community groups, partners, members’ parents, and others to assist in supporting the program.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Oversee special programs and/or events, and participate in the implementation of other unit activities as necessary.
  • Consult with parents concerning member issues.
  • Drive the Club Van for field trips ensuring members arrive at destinations in a safe and timely manner.
  • Coordinate supply runs for program necessities.

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:

? Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, or equivalent experience.

? Strong technical skills including computer, phone, printer, and other electronic devices.

? Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.

? Strong team building skills to promote a positive Club and work environment.

? Ability to work with a variety of people with various backgrounds and skill sets.

? Ability to work independently and in undefined environment.

? Strong knowledge and proficiency in environmental and outdoor philosophy.

? Ability to efficiently address disciplinary issues among members.

? Demonstrated leadership skills.
