Overview: The Director of Collections provides leadership and oversight of a team of collections, loss mitigation and asset recovery agents comprised of 35+ in-house and outsourced employees. The leader is responsible for developing effective strategies to recover outstanding debts and maximize recovery on reclaimed collateral, and ensuring compliance with all relevant regulations.

Responsibilities:

Specific duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Lead and motivate a team of in-house and outsourced collection agents to achieve set targets and objectives. Provide guidance, training, and support to enhance the team's performance. Monitor the performance of third party vendors contracted to perform collections, asset recovery and post-charge-off debt collections.
  • Manage outside counsel who oversee foreclosures and other litigation that arises in the normal course of business.
  • Develop and implement strategic plans for effective debt recovery. Analyze data and trends to identify areas for improvement in collection processes.
  • Optimize the in-house and outsourced resources to ensure members’ needs are addressed, while protecting the credit union from losses.
  • Ensure adherence to all legal and regulatory requirements in debt collection practices. Stay updated on industry regulations and implement changes as needed.
  • Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for the department. Conduct regular performance reviews and provide constructive feedback.
  • Oversee collection call quality control program ensuring all teams are performing in accordance with internal standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Leverage data analytics to measure team performance and collections effectiveness, and to identify trends to develop collections strategies and forecast future delinquency and losses for planning and forecasting purposes.
  • Engage in negotiations with debtors to establish reasonable repayment plans. Foster clear communication channels with internal stakeholders and external partners. Oversee the loss mitigation program.
  • Collaborate with lending team, legal and compliance to develop creative hardship solutions to assist members in need while minimizing loss and delinquency levels.
  • Identify and implement technological solutions to streamline collection processes. Optimize scalable agentless contact technologies for early stage delinquency to allow collectors to focus on the more complex later stage collections cases. Stay informed about advancements in debt
  • Perform other related duties as requested and special projects as assigned

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of leadership experience within lending operations, loan servicing or collections at a bank or credit union.
  • In-depth knowledge of mortgage and consumer credit, loan servicing, collections and lending operations.
  • In-depth knowledge of debt collection laws and regulations.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills – manages by metrics.
  • Excellent communication and negotiation abilities.
  • Must be able to operate effectively in a demanding, high-volume environment.
  • Demonstrated success in planning, organizing, leading people and activities. Ability to motivate, direct and coach staff.
  • Ability to perform in a high-volume environment and meet deadlines while maintaining exceptional attention to detail.
  • Technologically proficient.
