Department: Park Services                                                            Part-time Hourly/Non-exempt


Position Summary

The Zoo Educator performs duties under the direct supervision of the Park Services Recreation Supervisor and/or the Zoo Manager or Manager on Duty. General responsibilities include, but are not limited to educating guests on Randall Oaks Zoo animals either at the Zoo or in a traveling show, working with the animals, presenting at events or birthday parties. This is an at-will position.


Essential Responsibilities

General Operations

  • Provides information on the zoo facility and its animal collection through both educational and/or hands on public presentations throughout the zoo using live animals or demos. 
    • Presentations may be while working as Zoo Educator within the zoo, leading a Zoo Birthday Party, or presenting a travelling educational program.
  • Follows proper protocols for gathering and transporting animals for travelling educational programs.
  • Maintains records and perform basic vehicle maintenance as needed for travelling educational programs.
  • Maintains relationships with Animal Care staff in ensuring the animals are receiving the best care possible.
  • Displays excellent customer service skills.
  • Controls and engages large groups of children for Birthday Party tours within the zoo
  • Ensures the safety of the animal, the safety of themselves, and the safety of the guests while handling animals and giving demonstrations.
  • Complies with all safety and loss prevention policies.
  • Inform supervisor of any unsafe conditions or hazardous work procedures.
  • Correct any unsafe conditions, if possible, and instruct co-workers on safety procedures.
  • Completes all additional duties as prescribed by management.
  • Assists other Park District employees when needed.


Supervisory Responsibilities – This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Safety & Risk Management

  • Maintains a working knowledge of all general and departmental-specific safety rules.
  • Immediately reports all accidents and unsafe conditions to the supervisor.
  • Cooperates and assists in the investigation of accidents.
  • Attends all required safety program and in-service education meetings.
  • Treats public complaints and concerns with the utmost attention. Is courteous in all cases.
  • Pays strict attention to housekeeping of work area(s) and general facility.
  • Hold a current first aid/CPR certificate and keep staff current.


Qualifications

Must be minimum of 18 years of age, with a valid driver’s license. A high school diploma is a plus. Required 6 months experienced working with animals in the following capacity, not including household pets.

Basic knowledge of the animal species at Randall Oaks Zoo. Excellent customer service skills; verbal communication skills and listening skills, ability to speak in small and large groups.  Some Microsoft Office Suite (word, excel and outlook) experience preferred, not required.  Must be very comfortable working with and handling animals of a variety of species. Ability to spend long hours standing and moving in an outdoor environment. Ability to understand and carry out a variety of specific animal handling instructions particular to each animal.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • A working knowledge of the principles and practices of personnel management and an elementary knowledge of budget preparation. Not necessary
  • Good physical condition, sufficient strength, and mobility required.
  • Experience in Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to learn additional software and systems required for business transactions.
  • Possess good problem solving skills and has capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergencies.
  • Ability to pay meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to execute the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Hours Standards

This is a seasonal part time position, generally less than 20 hours per week. Hours are dependent on business needs, but will include day, night, weekends and holidays, depending on what special events are happening at the Zoo. There may be an opportunity for it to be a part time year around position if needed for the Zoo.
