Job DescriptionJob Description

Instrument Technicians install, repair or maintain in accordance with manufacturers or site specifications, electrical and instrument equipment using hand tools, power tools and precision measuring and testing instruments. Shift work is required.

Job Duties

  • Calibrate, troubleshoot and repair plant instrumentation i.e., transmitters, analyzers, control valves, switches, relays, etc.
  • Inspect, repair, replace transformers, switches, control equipment, wiring, and electrical systems.
  • Work with a wide variety of instruments including pH, conductivity, ultrasonic, radar levels, mass flow, pressure transducers, RTDs, etc.
  • Understand Piping and Instrument Diagrams, Signal Flow Diagrams, Wiring Diagrams, Panel Drawings, One Line Drawings, Loop Sheets, and Wire Lists.
  • Perform all duties in manner consistent with environmental, health and safety policies.
  • Measure, cut bend and install conduit, fittings and tubing as needed to install or repair equipment.
  • Lock, tag, try and test energy sources in order to make equipment inoperable and safe to work on.
  • Communicate with other employees using hand-held radios, telephones, e-mail, etc. in order to perform jobs efficient.
  • Remove and place back into service control type instrumentation after calibrating, services, troubleshooting, range change and maintenance work performed such as: flow transmitters, level transmitters, temperature transmitters, and on-line process analyzers.

Education: Associates Degree, equivalent military training and/or acceptable apprenticeship program in the field of electrical and instrumentation.

Related Experience: At least six years of experience with the following background:

  • Significant knowledge and experience troubleshooting Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) and Distributive Control Systems (DCS). Modicon, Foxboro and Intellution preferred.
  • Working knowledge of motors and conventional motor controls with single phase, multiphase, synchronous and servo applications preferred.
  • Working knowledge of a wide variety of instrument/electrical test equipment including significant experience with calibration and troubleshooting.
  • Experienced with instrumentation and controls including field transmitter setup and calibration of both wired and wireless systems.
  • Comfortable with high, medium and low voltage power distribution systems and relaying.
  • Experience with computer networking, digital communications, robotics and other specialized functional electronics preferred.
