Public Works Department, Engineering Division

POSITION RANGE: $35.92 - $41.25/hour

The Town of Groton, Connecticut is looking for an experienced Engineering Technician II to perform engineering survey and design work, computer aided drafting work for mapping and public works construction projects and provide technical assistance in the design, construction and inspection of public works construction projects. This is a union, non-exempt, full-time position.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Technical Services uses established surveying procedures in performing construction and land survey work. Performs duties as instrument person, stakes sites for construction work by Town maintenance forces and for contracted construction projects. Responsible for care and maintenance of survey instruments and equipment. Drafts original and updates property maps from current and previous surveyor notes, maps, deeds and related information. Prepares sketches, maps and reports. Provides technical assistance in the preparation of plans, specifications, designs and cost estimates for public works projects. Performs complex mathematical computations in survey, design and estimating work. Prepares and reviews legal descriptions of land and completes title researches. Assists and may lead in the inspection of public works construction projects to ensure conformity with construction, design and materials specifications or repair work. Assists public by providing information and technical assistance regarding permits, construction activity, and right-of-way location.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with an Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering, with course work in land surveying and six years’ experience in land surveying. Ability to operate computers and electronic surveying equipment.

Criminal background, drug testing, and driving record checks required prior to employment.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES:

Certification as a Land Surveyor, Chapter 391, Connecticut General Statutes and Valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
