We proudly lead advocacy efforts that rally our community to promote human rights, social justice, and economic opportunities for all. We are built upon the simple truth that people are experts in their own lives. Our programs are spread across 25 locations and include over 1200 units of supportive housing in three boroughs, the Howie the Harp Advocacy Center, East Village Access—a PROS program, Peer-driven Crisis Respite Center, Adult Home Initiative, Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) and the Intensive Mobile Team (IMT).

Program Description

Founded in 1995, our award-winning Howie the Harp (HTH) Advocacy Center trains individuals with experience living with mental health concerns to work in Peer direct service, supervisor, and management roles within the Human Services field. HTH is run by Peers and offers comprehensive training and internships experiences, as well as an array of support services to help students find and succeed in meaningful Peer employment.

Position Overview

The Lead Trainer is responsible for planning, developing, implementing, and delivering curriculum for the Peer Specialist Training Program and other training initiatives the Center may develop. The Lead Trainer is the primary classroom instructor who effectively teaches HTH curriculum to students through creating an engaging, supportive learning environment that is tailored to students’ unique learning needs. The Lead Trainer is responsible for planning activities include creating new training content, consulting with experts and researching current trends in Peer Specialist best practices and core competencies. As needed the Lead Trainer will work with the Director in identifying and scheduling external training consultants to provide specialized trainings to participants. The Lead Trainer supports the Director in evaluating programmatic and operational trends in support of overall Training Program outcomes.


Job Qualifications
  • Have an understanding, appreciation, and commitment to philosophy and mission of Community Access.
  • Recipient/survivor of mental health services, required.
  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent (GED) – Bachelor’s degree, preferred.
  • Previous experience working in education field, such as adult education, training, or teaching, required.
  • Demonstrated experience developing curriculum for classroom delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively deliver training and technical assistance using a variety of instructional techniques appropriate to an adult learning environment, required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, public speaking, teaching, and training skills.
  • Possess strong understanding and practice of recovery and wellness.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to utilize various computer programs, specifically, EHR, cloud-based data management systems, and Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information, as related to position.
  • Must be fingerprinted and cleared by the NYS Justice Center.
