Job DescriptionJob Description

The Tower Hand / Technician will perform all aspects of wireless communication facility construction including the climbing of towers, roofs and other antenna support structures. Perform all aspects of construction services on such structures including ground work, preparation of materials and/or the assembly of materials and assembling and testing of these facilities.

Work may involve overnight and out of town work, as well as work on other shifts or weekends and overtime as necessary to stay on the construction schedule.

Employment is contingent upon a favorable background screen which includes social security, employment verification and a criminal background check, drug testing, DOT as well as your ability to demonstrate that you possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Primary Work Functions include but not limited to:

  • Climbing towers or other antenna support structures including, but not limited to, roofs and other platforms on which the antennas are placed and their ancillary components.
  • Construct, install, maintain, and repair all aspects of wireless communications facilities as it pertains to the construction and upgrades of wireless communication facilities throughout the assigned region with frequent changes in assignment and work conditions.
  • Work with blueprints, specification sheets, assembly instructions, training guides, work authorizations, and otherverbal, written or electronic communications regarding how to construct the cell site.
  • Drive motor vehicles to and from sites, hooking up trailers to pull necessary materials for scheduled work, or other transport or storage vehicles.
  • Transport materials to the site either by hand, truck, trailer, or other appropriate vehicles such as ATV vehicle, dollies, hand trucks, etc.
  • Build and/or set up temporary structures.
  • Assembly of required materials and components for RF work performed on cell sites.
  • Work with blueprints, specification sheets, assembly instructions, training guides, work authorizations, and other verbal, written, or electronic communications regarding how to construct the cell site.
  • Troubleshooting under the direction of a Team Lead or Construction Manager to determine source of problems when equipment or assemblies installed are not properly functioning.
  • Attend project team, safety and construction meetings as requested and participate in all required safety training programs (OSHA, COM Training, First Aid and other training SAI may determine is needed for client specific or projects).
  • Work as part of a construction crew involving constant interpersonal relations, communication, and teamwork, training of other tower personnel, following all verbal and written instructions.
  • Represent SAI in a positive and professional manner at all times, including but not limited to sites where the carrier and/or customer may be present.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Prefer minimum of one to three years’ experience in construction or telecommunications experience with one year of climbing experience.
  • Must have valid drivers’ license to operate motor vehicles in state in which work is being performed.
  • Must have ability to pass pre-employment drug screen, criminal background check , DMV screen and DOT physical examination as well as subsequent random testing in accordance with SAI policy.
  • Mechanical ability with repetitive use of both hands, hand-eye coordination to assemble, troubleshoot, and construct assemblies and towers made of various materials such as steel, wood, iron, plastic, etc.
  • The ability to use safety harnesses and other safety equipment while climbing up to 1500’, carrying materials and tools or being on a ladder or scaffold for extended time periods. Use of hand tools, power equipment.
  • Completion of and maintain compliance with all SAI, OSHA and other safety and on-the-job training, including effectively following those procedures and guidelines when completing construction and prep work.

  • Ability to work independently, as well as work in a team environment
  • Self-starter with a strong work ethic, attention to detail and ability to thrive in an ever-changing work environment

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequent climbing, bending, squatting, reaching, pulling, pushing.
  • Frequent heavy lifting up to 75 pounds or more with assistance.
  • Perform required work outside, sometimes under adverse weather conditions.
