Position Summary

The Roderick & Solange MacArthur Justice Center (“MJC”) seeks an attorney to join its St. Louis, Missouri office, to play an important role in building, leading, and supporting a docket of high-impact advocacy, including litigation that furthers MJC’s mission. The attorney’s work will span a broad array of issues related to the criminal legal system, including: the rights of people incarcerated or detained in carceral facilities; civil rights abuses arising from police or prosecutorial misconduct; parole reform; the criminalization of poverty; protecting the rights of protestors; and government accountability.

The Attorney will collaborate with MJC’s team of experienced and dedicated professionals, including working closely with MJC’s Missouri team in strategic discussions around case investigation, development, and strategy, and to drive day-to-day work in new and ongoing civil rights litigation. The attorney will also be expected to contribute to broader strategic and operational discussions within the Missouri office and to participate in the larger ecosystem and strategic discussion related to their work across the organization more broadly. They will build relationships with other advocacy organizations, and may have the opportunity to represent MJC in public discourse related to their work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Advocacy / Litigation:

  • Researching and drafting pleadings, motions, and briefs;
  • Conducting oral and written discovery;
  • Participating in hearings and oral arguments;
  • Participating in settlement conferences and trials in both state and federal courts;
  • Managing client relationships and communications; and
  • Contribute to managing case team, strategy, and deadlines.

Contribute to Case Docket Development:

  • Conducting research;
  • Conducting and directing investigation, including intake and client field investigations; and
  • Developing strategies for pursuing issues relevant to the mission of the organization.

Travel: As required, for litigation and client interaction, including to prisons, jails, and other facilities of confinement.

Other Job Duties:

Attending MJC organizational-wide meetings and regular MO office planning meetings and participating in trainings relating to office technology and office-wide practices.

Qualifications

  • JD required;
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience, with at least 5 years of experience preferred;
  • Admission to the Missouri Bar, or eligibility for admission upon hiring;
  • Energetic self-starter with a passion for criminal justice reform and a desire to effectuate change in the St. Louis region, and Missouri more broadly;
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to follow-through on assignments independently, to manage several projects and deadlines at once, and to be flexible in the event of changing priorities and deadlines;
  • Excellent writing, editing, and oral communication skills;
  • Very close attention to detail and a commitment to completing tasks quickly and thoroughly;
  • Ability to work creatively and effectively as part of a cohesive team to develop new legal initiatives;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to engage with clients and others in the community;
  • Dedication to zealous advocacy and building client-centered relationships;
  • Experience using computer systems and databases and willingness to learn internal programs; and
  • Meticulous record and time keeping skills.
  • Prior experience working on social justice campaigns and/or with justice-system involved adults and juveniles a plus.

Location: St. Louis, Missouri. We are currently a hybrid organization, with all locations reporting to the office at least two days each week. This is not a remote position. The selected applicant must reside in this location by the first day of employment.

Compensation: The salary for this position is determined according to the organization’s internal salary scale, depending on experience. Assuming 5 years of relevant experience, the salary would be $100,000.
