The Senior Director, Patient Advocacy at BIO leads issue advocacy efforts under the direction of the SVP/Head of BIO’s Patient Advocacy Center of Excellence. They cultivate partnerships with patient advocacy and other non-profit organizations focused on public policies that support patient access and innovation. Responsible for informing BIO’s federal alliance strategy, they gather insights from advocacy communities to guide decision-making. This role coordinates closely with BIO Federal Affairs, manages individual patient advocacy initiatives, and amplifies patient stories on Capitol Hill. The Senior Director drives revenue for advocacy initiatives, participates in advisory councils, oversees the grants program, and may have supervisory duties.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:Develop and maintain strong relationships with federal policy-focused patient and research advocates and other important stakeholders and influencers:
  • Lead BIO’s engagement in patient advocacy coalitions to drive engagement on issues primarily related to value, access and reimbursement.
  • Serve as the primary liaison and resource between BIO and the advocacy community on federal policy issues.
  • Educate stakeholders on key policy priorities as determined by BIO and our members.
  • Lead BIO’s patient advocacy presence at patient groups’ annual meetings, retreats and conferences as appropriate, representing BIO’s and our members’ priorities.
  • Serve as a connector and a source of credible information by consistently delivering meaningful opportunities and relevant communications to advocates.
  • Partner with Federal Government Relations, to support BIO Perspectives and other individual patient advocacy efforts – bringing constituent’s patient stories to the Hill and advancing patient centered policies.
Effectively, clearly and regularly communicate Patient Advocacy priorities, goals, progress and other information to internal and cross functional teams, as appropriate:
  • Contribute to BIO’s government affairs and health policy strategies and provide insights to BIO regarding advocates’ perspectives and needs.
  • Ensure strong alignment and partnership with the health policy team, leveraging internal SMEs to support patient advocacy groups’ needs and advance shared goals.
  • Coordinate with teammates and the Alliance Development Committee to ensure customer outreach is coordinated and strategic.
  • Routinely report and act upon relevant information gleaned from participation in patient advocacy corporate advisory boards to leadership.
Contribute to BIO’s signature patient advocacy programs:
  • The Senior Director is part of a team that develops best in class programs and sessions for BIO’s annual convention and Patient Health and Advocacy Summit, ensuring that program development is aligned with BIO’s policy priorities for patient advocacy engagement.
  • Partner with Sponsorship to drive revenue for BIO annual events related to patient advocacy: Patient Advocacy Pavilion, breakfast, receptions, and the Annual Patient and Health Advocacy Summit

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Outstanding relationship management abilities and strong interpersonal skills
  • Superb communications skills, both written and interpersonal.
  • Supervisory skills and experience as a people manager desired.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of the federal legislative and reimbursement environment including the IRA, PBMs, Medicare Part B, Part D and Medicaid.
  • Ability to work effectively with groups across the political spectrum.
  • Strong desire to contribute to team success, with a genuine enthusiasm for supporting team members efforts.
Education and Experience Required:
  • The Senior Director must have 7+ years of work experience, with a minimum of 3 years working at a biopharmaceutical or device company as part of a corporate advocacy, alliance development, advocacy or public affairs team. Individuals with experience working for a CRO, Public Affairs firm or trade association with biopharmaceutical clients / members may also be considered.
  • The individual must have preexisting relationships with patient advocacy organizations as a credible member of the alliance development community. Ideally, someone who is currently sought out as a subject matter expert by member companies and / or patient groups.
  • Undergraduate degree required from a four-year institution.
