CAPS Collaborative is seeking a qualified high school special education and/ or certified English teacher for our alternative High School program. This candidate would teach a maximum of 32 students in small group classes of 8-10. The Collaborative setting services students with social emotional disabilities and /or trauma history. The high school team is supported by program administration, teachers, assistant teachers, behavioral staff, counselors and nursing staff. We are looking to add an energetic enthusiastic educator to our team. School year position with additional summer hours available. Mass Teacher Certification required.

Experience teaching in a therapeutic or mental health setting is preferred. Special Education Certification preferred but not required. CAPS Collaborative is an equal opportunity employer with a generous benefits package. Competitive salary scale.

About the role:

To coordinate, develop, and execute developmentally appropriate individual learning programs and educational services that will contribute to students' academic, social, and emotional growth.


Responsibilities:

  • Perform a variety of assessments and observations to determine the areas in which the student may need extra or modified educational services.
  • Assessment areas may include academic performance, behavior, social development, or physical health.
  • Identifies the students' needs and develops related lesson and teaching plans.
  • With the support of a mentor, develops individualized education programs (IEPs) for students, sets learning goals and adopts modifications as necessary; ensures each student's activities and lessons are planned and organized according to ability
  • Reports on student progress toward IEP goals quarterly.
  • Demonstrate the use of screening and assessment tools that are culturally and linguistically sensitive; write reports and make appropriate educational recommendations
  • Develop cooperative and ethical working relationships with professional colleagues (CAPS, consultants, related service providers and member districts, demonstrate the ability to openly share ideas, problem-solve and engage in thoughtful conflict resolution
  • Develop and maintain instructional space with respect for diversity, equity, and inclusion and a commitment to culturally responsive pedagogy
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and team members.
  • Develops and teaches lessons that provide engaging learning opportunities for small groups and individual students while meeting required specifications of IEPs and 504 plans.
  • Implements IEPs, provides ongoing or follow-up assessments, and continually tracks progress and makes modifications as necessary.
  • Understands and develops intervention strategies and behavior intervention plans.
  • Ensures programs comply with Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA); ensures each applicable student is provided with Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) that is properly modified for his/her individual needs.
  • Prepare students for participation in standardized testing, including but not limited to the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment (MCAS) and MCAS-Alt; administer exams as requested; assist with provision of testing accommodations
  • Develops, completes, and maintains all paperwork mandated by local, state, and federal guidelines, laws, and regulations.
  • Attends all IEP meetings.
  • Maintains knowledge of special education teaching methods, research, and best practices through professional development and study.
  • Develop short and long-term objectives for instructional assistants assigned to you in terms of their instructional and non-instructional activities,; Supervise the implementation of these activities as requested by the Program Director and participate in the formal and informal evaluation of each instructional assistant as requested by the Program Director.
  • Demonstrate positive and responsive classroom management that fosters mutual respect, safety and curiosity
  • Advocates on behalf of the students.
  • Celebrates the achievements and successes of students.
  • Recognizes the importance of staff attitude and professionalism in responding effectively to those in their charge.
  • Maintain professional boundaries and ensure student/staff confidentiality as appropriate within the educational Team
  • Contribute to professional growth and collaboration by staying informed on current literature/resources in the field and actively participating in staff meetings and professional development opportunities
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to maintain a calm and patient demeanor with all students.
  • Thorough understanding of various special education needs and services.
  • Thorough understanding of and the ability to implement a variety of effective teaching methods.
  • Thorough understanding of policies, laws, and guidelines related to special education including IDEA, IEPs, and 504.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Bachelor's degree and MA license in English Language Arts. Masters degree preferred.
  • Special Education license preferred but not required
  • Two years of experience is highly
  • Ability to manage one's own emotions and foster student regulation using research based intervention and support strategies

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods standing and walking throughout school and classroom.
  • Must be able to lift to 15 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to assist students who have physical difficulties.
  • Must be able to kneel, sit, stand, crawl, push, and pull to assist and teach children throughout the day.
  • Prolonged periods sitting and working on computer to complete necessary paperwork.
