Job Description

The primary role of the Maintenance Planner is to improve work force productivity and work quality by eliminating in advance potential delays and obstacles through proper planning of the required materials, procedures, and resources for maintenance work. The Planner is responsible for the planning and scheduling of all maintenance work performed in the area to which he/she is assigned. He/she maintains appropriate records and files to permit meaningful analysis and reporting of results or completed work. The Planner reports to the Reliability Foreman.

Basic Requirements

• Must have a “safety first” attitude and the ability to learn, follow, and promote all USG safety rules, policies and programs.

• Must be reliable and self-motivated.

• Must possess a demonstrated high degree of tact in dealing with both plant staff and craft personnel.

• Good verbal and written communication skills.

• Higher than average administrative and mathematical skills together with a willingness and ability to organize and process paperwork.

• Adequate mechanical and electrical trade knowledge to estimate labor hours and materials and to visualize the job to be performed.

• The ability to read and interpret equipment and plant prints and manuals.

• Must be capable of navigating and using standard plant computer software for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, email and web search.

• Must participate in all required computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) training and develop a working knowledge of the plant’s CMMS.

• Must be capable of working with vendors and holding them accountable for high levels of service including availability, delivery, quality and workmanship.

• Must be capable and willing to operate a lift truck (training provided if necessary).

Job Procedures and Requirements

• Reviews and screens each work order to see that is has been properly filled out.

• Consults with requester or maintenance supervisor when necessary.

• Conducts the daily approval meetings for all new work requests.

• Examines jobs to be done and works with maintenance supervision to determine best way to accomplish the work.

• Prepares job planning packages as appropriate to include information such as procedures, safety information, drawings, photos, bills of materials, and any other information necessary to complete work orders in the most efficient manner.

• Develops and maintains planned and predictive maintenance procedures as required.

• Identifies and obtains (requisitions, orders, kits as appropriate and in keeping with procedures) materials, special tools and equipment necessary to complete the work.

• Determines if critical items are in stock by verifying availability with stores.

• Organizes and maintains backlog of work orders to facilitate timely and orderly completion of maintenance work.

• Develops a file of standard work orders (plans) for regularly recurring repair jobs, based on historical experience.

• Reviews completed work orders and craftsmen feedback along with maintenance supervisors for potential updates/improvements regarding future work or CMMS data.

• Maintains accurate bills of materials and equipment histories, and the integrity of all data collected in the CMMS.

• Conducts informal training as required of maintenance personnel in proper reporting procedures and in the use of CMMS software as a maintenance tool.

• Assists the warehouse personnel as needed with orders, receiving, distribution, etc.


Rate of pay may be adjusted based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate.
