POSITION SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Communications Manager, the Public Outreach Coordinator implements the public relations strategy for the City, coordinates, writes, and edits regular publications, develops graphics and messaging, facilitates community outreach, and supports events. This position supports all City departments as needed.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  1. Executes the public relations and community outreach plan for the City and City departments.

1.1 Provides assistance and information to the public relating to city events, programs, services, and activities; does so in a timely, proactive and transparent manner.

1.2 Researches, interviews and gathers information and input to create messages and publications.

1.3 Supports communication staff in each department in formulating messages.

1.4 Creates flyers, notices and other documents, coordinates printing and distribution.

1.5 Manages electronic channels, including creation of graphics and ensuring circulation of timely messages.

1.6 Catalogs and keeps record of all projects and communication collateral.

1.7 Updates City web pages and supports departments with revisions.

1.8 Updates and monitors City's social media accounts; responds to comments as appropriate.

1.9 Coordinates, writes, edits, and proofs articles, graphics, and images for monthly City newsletters.

1.10 Facilitates media relations and assists appropriate spokespeople.

1.11 Assists in formulating and implementing the city communication strategy.

1.12 Assists in crisis communications.


  1. Assists with planning and promoting City events and outreach for departments citywide.

2.1 Assists with planning and promoting events, activities, community outreach meetings, employee meetings, and other activities.

2.2 Coordinates with department and divisions to promote events.

2.3 Supports outreach campaigns to educate and inform the public on city policies, services, and programs.

2.4 Documents city events and activities through photos, video, and written to share through media.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in communication, public relations, public administration, or related subject, and four years of relevant experience or any equivalent combination of related education and experience.
  • Certifications in the fields of public relations or marketing are recommended.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Knowledge of best practices of public engagement, outreach, and social media applications.
  2. Knowledge of statistical survey practices and fair and unbiased methods of collecting input.
  3. Skill in communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing. Skill in speaking or writing in multiple languages is helpful.
  4. Skill in creating professional and concise written, verbal and graphic public statements and presentations.
  5. Skill in interacting and supporting diverse people from a wide variety of backgrounds while displaying cultural competency, patience and good customer service.
  6. Skill in maintaining confidential and sensitive information.
  7. Skill in task prioritizing and time management.
  8. Skills in word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphic design, desktop publishing and website design.
  9. Skill in using office equipment and operating computers and mobile devices.
  10. Ability to work independently and delegate tasks as needed.
  11. Ability to work as a team member and to build collaboration.
  12. Ability to communicate effectively in a crisis or emergent situation.
  13. Ability to stay current on South Salt Lake community and current affairs.
  14. Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
