Position Purpose

The primary purpose of this position is to assist the credit union in achieving its service mission of building trusted relationships by providing our members with superior financial solutions and outstanding service.

The Consumer Loan Underwriter examines, evaluates, authorizes, or recommends approval of borrower's applications for credit or extension of lines of credit, consumer credit loans, credit card and real estate within authorized authority of an Underwriter in accordance with sound underwriting practices as set out in our policy and procedure.


Essential Functions

  • Analyzes credit applications received from all sources including indirect applications. Analysis includes, but is not limited to, reviewing applicant financial status, credit history, and property evaluation; assess income, calculating debt ratios, and reviewing/researching any other factors needed to evaluate credit worthiness to determine feasibility of granting loan requests.
  • Approves loans within designated loan approval authority level or submits application recommendations to appropriate person for decision making
  • Analyzes potential lending opportunities involved in each lending situation to further assist the borrower as well as increase the credit union's lending portfolio. Cross-sells borrowers and potential borrowers on the benefits of utilizing other credit union services
  • Maintains working knowledge of the policies, laws, rules, regulations, and procedures regarding credit union products offered to members
  • Reviews difficult and special circumstance loan transactions and workouts and makes recommendations to management on how to handle
  • Interviews and counsels credit challenged members to restructure debt load.
  • Provides support, training, and guidance to staff
  • Proficiency in understanding basic tax returns for the purpose of assessing income.
  • Skilled in asking the right questions to understand a member's story to say yes to more loans.
  • Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned

Job Qualifications

Required:

  • 2+ years of applicable lending experience
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently, without direct supervision and still accomplish goals
  • Ability to produce a high volume of work in a fast-paced environment
  • Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Suite (including Word, Excel and Windows)
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong research and problem resolution skills
  • Intermediate mathematics skills, including the ability to calculate interest, percent's, compute rates and ratios
  • Ability to work on multiple projects and tasks at one time.
  • Excellent customer service skills

Preferred:

  • Consumer Underwriting Experience
  • Previous loan origination or sales experience
  • Experience with loan processing software and data processing systems
