Position Overview

The main objective of this role is to support the credit union in fulfilling its service mission by fostering trusted relationships through exceptional financial solutions and service.

The Consumer Loan Underwriter is responsible for reviewing, assessing, authorizing, or recommending the approval of loan applications for credit or extensions of credit lines, consumer loans, credit cards, and real estate, in line with the established underwriting standards and practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Evaluates credit applications from various sources, including indirect submissions. This involves analyzing the applicant's financial situation, credit history, and property assessments; determining income, calculating debt ratios, and examining other relevant factors to assess creditworthiness and the viability of loan requests.
  • Grants loan approvals within the specified authority level or forwards applications for further decision-making.
  • Identifies potential lending opportunities in each scenario to better assist borrowers and enhance the credit union's lending portfolio. Promotes additional credit union services to borrowers and prospective clients.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of policies, laws, regulations, and procedures related to credit union products available to members.
  • Reviews complex loan transactions and special cases, providing recommendations to management on appropriate actions.
  • Consults with and advises members facing credit challenges to help them restructure their debt.
  • Offers support, training, and mentorship to team members.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in interpreting basic tax returns for income assessment.
  • Skilled in asking insightful questions to understand a member's situation and facilitate loan approvals.
  • Completes all other assigned tasks and responsibilities.
Qualifications

Required:
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant lending experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities.
  • Capability to work autonomously and achieve objectives without direct oversight.
  • Ability to manage a high volume of work in a dynamic environment.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and Windows).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective research and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Intermediate mathematical skills, including the ability to compute interest, percentages, rates, and ratios.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
Preferred:
  • Experience in consumer underwriting.
  • Background in loan origination or sales.
  • Familiarity with loan processing software and data management systems.
