Position Overview: The On-Premises Systems Migration Specialist will be responsible for leading the migration of on-premises systems to the AWS cloud. This role is critical in enhancing the agency’s security and management capabilities by transitioning internal systems into AWS which is integrated with the agency’s Zero Trust Architecture. The successful candidate will collaborate with developers to identify candidate systems, develop migration and testing plans, oversee the migration process, and coordinate with externally hosted system owners to encourage similar migrations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Identification of Migration Candidates:
    • Conduct a thorough assessment of  remaining on-premises applications to identify systems that are suitable candidates for cloud migration.
    • Analyze each system's requirements, dependencies, and potential challenges to determine the feasibility of migration.
  2. Cloud Deployment Model Determination:
    • Collaborate with developers to determine the most appropriate cloud deployment model (e.g., IaaS, PaaS, SaaS) for each candidate system, considering factors such as performance, scalability, and cost.
    • Evaluate and recommend cloud services and tools that align with operational needs and security requirements.
  3. Development of Implementation & Testing Plans:
    • Create detailed implementation and testing plans for each candidate system, outlining the steps necessary for a successful migration to AWS.
    • Ensure that the plans include thorough testing protocols to validate the performance, security, and integration of each system within AWS.
  4. Migration Oversight and Execution:
    • Lead and oversee the migration of selected on-premises applications to the AWS cloud, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing operations.
    • Coordinate with relevant stakeholders to ensure that each migration is fully integrated with Zero Trust Architecture, maintaining the highest security standards.
    • Monitor the migration process, troubleshoot issues as they arise, and implement corrective actions as needed.
  5. Coordination with Externally Hosted Systems:
    • Engage with owners of externally hosted systems to assess their current infrastructure and encourage migration to AWS.
    • Provide guidance and support to externally hosted system owners in planning and executing their migrations, ensuring alignment with cloud strategy.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree. A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 8 years of experience in IT infrastructure, cloud computing, or systems engineering, with a focus on cloud migration projects.
    • Proven experience in migrating on-premises systems to cloud environments, particularly AWS.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Strong understanding of cloud computing principles, AWS services, and cloud deployment models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS).
    • Expertise in cloud migration tools and methodologies, including AWS Migration Hub, AWS Server Migration Service, and AWS Database Migration Service.
    • Familiarity with Zero Trust Architecture and its implementation in cloud environments.
  • Certifications: AWS Certified Solutions Architect, AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner, or other relevant cloud certifications are highly desirable.
