Job DescriptionJob Description

This position is accountable for new process development for the production of existing products; design and fabrication of test fixtures; designs, develops, and/or purchases equipment to produce a quality and cost-effective product.  This position is accountable for the design, redesign, layout, and engineering of tooling, equipment, and machinery; for monitoring the completion schedules of projects of product application or design; and for accurate cost estimates of product quotation requests.  This position is accountable for troubleshooting all machinery to produce a quality product in a cost-effective manner.

Duties:
Including but not limited to:

Reporting and Collaboration:

  • Report to the Automation Manager alongside the Process Engineer (Assembly), Process Engineering Technicians, and Assembly Technician.
  • Maintain a close relationship with various vendors and suppliers of manufacturing equipment.

Technical Expertise and Problem-Solving:

  • Serve as the technical expert for assembly in areas such as material strength, manufacturing processes, OSHA standards, electrical/pneumatic controls, fluid power, tool/fixture design, and computer-aided drafting.
  • Be an effective problem solver with creativity in design, manufacturing, and industrial engineering.

Capital Expenditures and Equipment Management:

  • Obtain quote requests for capital expenditures.
  • Study existing operations to justify new equipment purchases, ensuring smooth material flow and minimal production disruption.
  • Authorize and oversee the movement of production equipment as necessary.
  • Determine and manage the procurement of auxiliary equipment (lighting, ventilation, storage, etc.).

Project Management:

  • Act as project manager for approved projects, ensuring activities are completed on schedule and within budget.
  • Ensure that complete drawings, specifications, layouts, and documentation for operations/maintenance are available upon project completion and turnover to production.

Process Documentation and Improvement:

  • Write and update manufacturing processes to ensure proper methods.
  • Conduct time studies and evaluate existing processes to maintain standards.
  • Assist product design with new/existing manufacturing processes and methods.
  • Provide estimators with information for costing new and existing products.
  • Justify new tooling and technology in manufacturing areas.
  • Keep up-to-date with new manufacturing processes and methods to improve efficiency.

Training and Programming:

  • Assist with training on operation and preventative maintenance of installed equipment.
  • Be proficient in programming various machines with different programming languages.

Communication and Interpersonal Skills:

  • Possess excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Interact professionally with individuals throughout and external to the company.
  • Promote good working relationships among supervisors, peers, and reports.

Computer Proficiency:

  • Be proficient in software applications necessary for successful job performance.

Qualifications

  • Serve as the technical expert for assembly processes, including automatic assembly technology, PLC integration/programming, lean principles for waste reduction, vision detection/programming, and value stream mapping.
  • Design and supervise the installation and construction of production tools, fixtures, jigs, and workstations to improve safety, efficiency, reliability, and profit, ensuring design and material specifications are met.
  • Manage projects to ensure they stay within established budgets and approve invoices for equipment and installation.
  • Assist in monitoring government requirements (EPA, OSHA, etc.) to ensure systems and stations comply with established standards.
  • Provide input on costs for cost-reduced products and set manufacturing standards for existing processes to establish production costs.
  • Calculate the feasibility of production projects to ensure a return on investment by reducing labor and/or materials while maintaining product quality.
  • Design and supervise the installation of equipment and systems to improve efficiency and profitability.
  • Monitor and sustain yield and throughput concerning order demand and quality specifications.
  • Keep the Assembly Coach and Manufacturing Manager fully informed of product design matters that impact their areas of concern, including leading technical investigations and root cause analysis to resolve manufacturing issues.
  • Maintain manufacturing-related documentation and information, including blueprints, BOMs, routings, databases, machine programs, APQP documentation, etc.
  • Stay current with technology in assigned areas and work to reduce labor-intensive operations on the shop floor by implementing automation in manufacturing processes.
  • Follow all company policies and procedures to ensure ISO 9001 Certification and QS 9000 Compliance.
  • Utilize Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies/practices to improve efficiency and profitability throughout the plant.
  • Program various programmable controllers/machines used in manufacturing processes, including PLCs, robots, CNC machines, inspection equipment, etc.
  • Support the continual improvement and compliance of QMS and EMS.
