Atlanta, GA – Traveling Field Mechanic

Position:

Traveling Field Mechanic- Truck and Heavy Equipment

Overview:

Join our dynamic Highway Division as a Field Equipment Specialist. Based in Atlanta, you'll travel with our crews to support projects initially in North Georgia for the next 18-24 months. Post-project, you’ll continue traveling across the Southeastern United States. This role involves maintaining a diverse fleet of diesel, gas, hydraulic, and electric concrete cutting equipment, along with transport and support vehicles. The environment is fast-paced and ever-evolving, requiring a self-motivated individual who thrives under minimal supervision. Your role will be crucial in keeping our equipment operational and coordinating logistics to meet job schedules.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Equipment Maintenance: Ensure trucks and equipment are well-maintained and ready for use, with minimal supervision. Complete necessary paperwork for repair tracking, including DOT driver logs.
  • Logistics Management: Source and manage supplies, maintain inventory, and ensure tools and materials are available according to project needs.
  • Coordination: Work closely with the Division Manager to align with job schedules and communicate with the Regional Shop Foreman and Fleet Management about needs and progress.
  • Field Repair: Perform repairs on a variety of equipment, including diesel and gas engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical components. Manage repair tracking and maintenance documentation.

Position Requirements:

  • Ability to adapt to changing workflows and work flexible hours (up to 60+ hours per week), including overnight travel and weekends.
  • Maintain truck cleanliness and parts inventory.
  • Report to the Division Manager and coordinate work based on job scheduling.
  • Regular communication with the Regional Shop Foreman and Fleet Management.
  • Physical capability to stand, bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and lift weights over 50 pounds.

Skill Requirements:

  • Diagnose and repair small and large diesel and gas engines, including periodic maintenance and major repairs.
  • Service and repair mechanical and electronic systems on trucks and heavy equipment, including air brakes, transmissions, and pneumatic systems.
  • Understanding of hydraulic systems, including diagnostics, repairs, and interpretation of schematics.
  • Knowledge of AC and DC electrical systems, including reading diagrams and making repairs.
  • Basic metal fabrication skills such as welding and cutting.
  • Ability to troubleshoot minor issues over the phone.

Types of Equipment:

  • Walk-behind and ride-on slab saws (Husqvarna, Diamond Products)
  • Rotary screw compressors, pneumatic sealant supply systems, abrasive blasting equipment
  • Hand-held cutting tools (electric, hydraulic, gas-powered)
  • Hydraulic power units (diesel/gas)
  • Electric generators (diesel/gas, small and large)
  • Light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks (box, stake, and open body)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of heavy-duty/industrial mechanic experience or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a DOT Medical Card physical examination.
  • Own hand tools (service truck and support tools provided by the company).
  • Negative drug test results.
  • Experience with concrete cutting equipment preferred but not required.

Schedule:

  • Full-time position with expected hours ranging from 45 to 65 per week.
  • Flexibility for 10-hour shifts, day and night shifts, on-call, and weekend work.
  • Year-round work with extensive travel required.
