Culinary Instructor

The Culinary Instructor will be responsible for hands-on culinary class instruction conforming with HTA’s curriculum and lessons to a widely diverse student population. The Culinary Instructor will support the Director of Food and Beverage Training with the culinary apprenticeship program and other culinary and hospitality-related classes in Los Angeles. The Culinary Instructor will report to the Director of Food and Beverage Training. This role is temporary.
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
1. Demonstrates the ability to teach in a manner consistent with HTA’s objectives and adapt to Director of Food and Beverage Training's guidance, adhering to HTA’s standards and policies2. Provides collaborative input into the development of curriculum, tests, worksheets, and other teaching materials, and contributes to improve the effectiveness of HTA’s programs
3. Engages, motivates, and maintains students’ interest in active learning to create an effective, positive, and focused learning environment that promotes students’ understanding of program concepts, and encourages them to ask questions and show respect for the instructors, fellow classmates, and HTA staff.
4. Delivers clear, organized, and understandable lectures, and facilitates active, learner-centered discussions
5. Assures that classes are conducted in a manner that complies with principles of food safety and sanitation code
6. Supervises Assistant Culinary Instructors to ensure proper job performance7. Professionally represents HTA in the community and actively engages HTA’s potential and existing industry partners, developing excellent collaborative relationships with them to encourage their participation
8. Regularly communicates with HTA’s industry partners to help facilitate our students’ employment with them
9. Interacts sensitively and positively with students, staff and faculty from widely diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
10. Provides students with the knowledge and skills to become successful, work-ready employees upon their successful completion of the culinary program
11. Schedule availability to be able to teach all scheduled HTA culinary classes as assigned.
12. Ability to commute to HTA Headquarters and companies or partners located in Los Angeles County and surrounding counties.
13. Be able to use own vehicle for food pickups and other HTA offsite duties
14. Demonstrates ability to interact in a collaborative manner with others, including staff, faculty, students, and industry professionals
15. Performs other duties as assigned
MIMIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bilingual in Spanish and English
Bachelor’s degree level culinary diploma, or suitable equivalent experience as HTA determines
Minimum of 7 years’ experience as a Sous Chef or Executive Chef in a fine dining environment
Must be able to be ServSafe Instructor/Proctor certified prior to teaching
This is position requiring varied work hours and days; a flexible work schedule is required
Be able to stand for 8 hours at a time while teaching class
Ability to lift and/or move food, merchandise, and/or kitchen equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., including moving and placing these objects below the waist and above the head.
Able to bend, stoop, kneel, reach, push, and pull to demonstrate cooking techniques, to gather and put away cooking equipment, and supplies.
Able to use hands in all manners customarily used in a commercial restaurant kitchen, to grab, hold, grasp, turn, lift, or all other customary hand motions or usage, in order to chop, slice, slice, stir, and/or to demonstrate any and all other culinary techniques.
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
Strong proactive critical thinking and problem-solving skills required
Excellent and effective written and verbal presentation skills and interpersonal communication skills
Demonstrates a dynamic speaking voice and speaking style
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite - PowerPoint, Word and Excel
Must possess a valid Driver’s License
