Ruby’s Place (RP) is an innovative nonprofit committed to ending domestic violence, human trafficking, and violent crime through hope, advocacy and connection. Our services include emergency shelter, transitional housing, rental subsidies, mental health services, and wrap around services. All our services are trauma-sensitive and client-centered and are provided at no cost to our clients. There are no barriers to participate in our programs.

What qualifications are required for this position?

You Are Also:

  • Experienced in fundraising, with a minimum of six years experience, with demonstrated skills.

  • Experienced in domestic violence and human trafficking. 

  • Experienced in grant-writing and proposal-writing. 

  • Excellent in communication skills; articulate, with proven ability to write effectively and speak persuasively. 

  • Someone with superior organizational, analytical and strategic thinking skills. 

  • Experienced managing and tracking cross-functional projects

  • In possession of a valid CA driver's license, proof of insurance, and be approved by Ruby's Place insurance as a driver in order to drive agency vehicles.  If a staff member cannot be approved by Ruby’s Place insurance as a driver, employment might not be able to continue.  Instances where staff cannot be approved to drive will be reviewed on a case by case basis to determine if employment can continue in their role without driving agency vehicles.  Items considered include but are not limited to: the shift the staff member holds and the frequency/necessity of driving during that shift, the amount of time before the staff member may be approved to drive by the insurance carrier, the availability of other staff on site to drive agency vehicles as program needs require, etc.

  • Able to complete a background check, fingerprinting (Live Scan), and completion of all Community Care Licensing requirement documents.  Able to meet all licensing requirements of Community Care Licensing.

What You Will Do

The anticipated start date for this position is early 2023. You will report to the Executive Director  (ED). You are responsible for designing, implementing and meeting annual strategic fundraising goals, leading strategic communications, supporting priority partnerships, and overseeing the Development and Communications Department. The DS monitors public and private funding and program trends in the regions where Ruby’s Place works. The DS also works with the Executive Director (ED) to solicit donations. The DS will expand community support for the agency through community relations, speaking engagements, newsletters and charitable events. You will be an intergale part of the strategic planning and vision for the agency. You wil develop funding plans on how to support the vision. 

Responsibilities include

  1. In collaboration with the ED, manage and implement a multi-year strategic fundraising and sustainability plan including public grants and other sources. 

  2. Participate in the marketing committee.

  3. Participate in the business development committee as it relates to funding and development of the agency.

  4. Oversee the public communications of the agency and supervise the Communications Manager. 

  5. Actively participate and strategize with the ED, committees and Board of Directors on the building projects in the overall strategic plan. 

  6. Research and set up meetings with partners, funders, developers, investors and donors as needed.

  7. Represent the Agency at community events as requested.

  8. Oversee grant prospect list and grants calendar; coordinate and manage proposal writing and grant reporting for private foundations.

  9. Oversee proposal writing and submission of proposals in response to government RFP’s.

  10. Coordinate with the Finance Department on procedures and policies for tracking and reporting development activities.

  11. Develop community events.

  12. Assist with recruiting and cultivating new donors to the agency.

  13. Oversee the development of new brochures, fliers, etc.

  14. Secure funding for special strategic projects.

  15. Solicit and obtain various donations for clients as they relate to housing needs including, but not limited to: move-in furnishings and supplies, basic supplies, food, etc.

  16. Manage campaigns (October National DV activities and January National HT, Develop annual fundraising appeal).

  17. Prepare budgets and expenses, as well as reports, for private foundations.

  18. Maintain an orderly filing system.

  19. Provide reflective supervision.

  20. Fill out a functional timesheet by assigned due dates in compliance with the time allocations.

  21. Actively participate in reflective supervision

  22. Create and maintain documentation of processes and procedures in relation to duties of the job

  23. Other duties as assigned by your supervisor

Working Conditions

This position is eligible for hybrid in person & remote work. Time spent on-site versus remote working will be discussed and agreed upon with your supervisor.  You are expected to be available on-site as necessary given business needs. You must be able to stand for long periods of time and perform physical activities, including lifting up to 25 pounds. You will be subject to frequent interruptions and must be able to multitask and handle stress.

Local travel in the greater Bay Area may be required.

The pay scale for the Director of Strategy is $130-140k annual salary. The benefits that come with working at Ruby’s Place at full-time hours include medical, dental, and vision plans, a life insurance policy, significant vacation, sick time, sabbatical, and immediate vesting in our 403(b) with a generous match. This is a full-time, salaried position. This is a hybrid position (flex work), 40 hours a week, with some days required in our Castro Valley Office.
