The Oral Health Team Assistant is responsible for explaining the benefits of good oral health and potential care options to patients and their families, as well as executing basic patient marketing initiatives for the Dental Department across different company and non-company locations. Additionally, the position entails scheduling and confirming appointments, offering fundamental administrative, clerical, and technical support services for the Dental Department. The OHT Assistant is further responsible for managing inventory and ordering supplies for Oral Health Screenings and Outreach events. Serving as a liaison between Dental Clinics and Medical Clinics, the OHT Dental Assistant coordinates on-site Oral Health Screenings. Moreover, the position engages in community outreach at various company and non-company sites.

Principal Responsibilities:

  1. Prepare and deliver oral health presentations, along with potential care options, explaining benefits of good oral health to patients and their families at various sites.
  2. Set-up and coordinate all aspects of Health Fairs and other community outreach activities.
  3. Maintain marketing and educational materials and communicate basic oral health instruction and provide giveaways (educational flyers, Oral Hygiene bags, etc.) to patients.
  4. Perform all other related duties as assigned by Dental Director.
  5. Schedule and confirm appointments and perform all reminder calls.
  6. Verify insurance eligibility and perform financial screenings.
  7. Proactively manage the patient flow to reduce cycle time and enhance the patient experience.
  8. Enter all patient information into the Practice Management system.
  9. Assists patients in resolving minor difficulties, answering their questions and giving directions to patients as authorized by the dentist.
  10. Coordinates oral health screenings at the medical and dental clinics and communicates with the medical care team to make sure screenings are accomplished and daily goals are met. Performs independent procedures as delegated by the dentist in accordance with state regulation, law, and Department directive’s and protocols.
  11. Maintains adequate operation of supplies and compiles a list of individual item shortages for inventory control and ordering purposes.
  12. Maintains a list of all scheduled Oral Health Screening patients, monitors patient flow, and assists the dentist(s) in assuring that all patient records and documents are properly and accurately completed and filed.
  13. Receives and places necessary telephone calls consistent with professional matters, clinic business and patient care of the Dental Department.
  14. Ensures the proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials in accordance with Dental Department directives, clinic policy, as well as state and federal regulations.
  15. Participates in appropriate health promotion / disease prevention activities, both on-site and off-site as required.
  16. Maintains Dental Department compliance, relative to Infection Exposure Control, safety, and HIPPA as required by local, State, and Federal guidelines, Dental Department directives and protocols, and clinic policies and procedures.

Education and Experience:

  1. High School diploma or GED certificate.
  2. Customer service experience.
  3. Knowledge of specific issues related to Oral Health Education for children, adolescents, pregnant women and chronic medical conditions such as HIV, Diabetes, high blood pressure, cancers.
  4. Bilingual: English /Spanish is preferred.
  5. Dental Assistant Certificate from an accredited Institution is preferred.
  6. Valid CA Driver's License and clean driving record.

Skills and Abilities:

  1. Effective written and oral communication.
  2. Comprehensive knowledge of dental assisting techniques and procedures for all phases of specialty and general dentistry.
  3. Knowledge of modern dental materials, their storage, handling and applications.
  4. Ability to work with persons from a wide diversity of social, ethnic and economic background.
  5. Ability to work creatively with other health care professionals from a variety of disciplines to achieve maximal results for the clinic’s patient, from a system of integrated primary health care.
  6. Ability to multitask and prioritize assignments and responsibilities to ensure compliance with established deadlines and protocols.

Physical Requirements:

  1. Prolonged sitting or standing may be required. Those physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with dental assisting in specialty and general practice dentistry will be performed on a repetitive basis.
  2. May require travel to sites/program and special functions.
  3. Work under stressful conditions as well as irregular hours may be required.
  4. Environmental Conditions Critical to Performance.
  5. Frequent exposure to communicable disease, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal, preparations, radiation and other conditions common to a clinical environment may routinely be encountered.
  6. OSHA Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure Classification - Category I.
  7. Utilizes appropriate Infection Control protocols.
  8. May be exposed to low level radiation.
  9. Will be exposed to outside environmental conditions while traveling.
